I need some help guys, I shoot a lot of exotic vehicles and never able to get proper sounds to do the car justice. Any advice on how I can get good exhaust/engine sounds from the car?

In regards to wind noise when traveling at any rate of speed, I have a rhode video mic

I was thinking of doing a wireless LAAV setup and just putting the microphone in the engine bays of these vehicles.

If you really want to grab good deep exhaust audio you will need a large diaphragm dynamic microphone.

That would give you lots of engine noise but usually not much of the exhaust note.

Maybe a Shure SM57 with a good Rycote WindJammer/Dead Cat/Baby Ball Gag with WindJammer on it in a Rycote InVision shockmount suction cup mounted with an Avenger suction cup to the hood and again to somewhere near the back of the car?

While a 57 would not be my first choice it is a good choice, I would tend to use a RE-20 or RE-320 to grab the pounding bass some exhaust systems can produce, either way, wind noise is going to be a pain in the tush to deal with.

If the OP is a motor-head and really into racing and has access to one, I would recommend recording the car on a strap down dyno, that would allow the engine to be run through its paces and recorded but not moving therefore no wind noise.

And many tuners have monitors that can be viewed from the drivers seat while the car is on the dyno, creating a Foley like environment where an experienced driver can match the engines rpm’s and gear(s) selection to the video recorded.
