I've only used the Canon 200EG (external link) ever since I've had equipment starting 6 years ago. It's been a good bag, but I'm at the point where I hate the backpack idea. I may go street shooting and have to stop, set it on the ground, change lens, put it back on... it's just awkward and I need something else is more user-friendly but can still pack quite a bit.

I mainly carry body, 50mm, 10-22, 17-50, 70-200, flash, and random things like spare batteries etc.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

How about the Lowepro Fastpack series where you have quick access or the Tamrac Evolution series also with quick access. Both also have storage for other gear.

Have a good local camera shop? Go to a camera store and try a few of the different bags.

The retro 20 can hold all of this: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1218712

The retro50 can hold everything in my signature, a laptop and a few other bits, so I generally half pack it to save my shoulders.

Putting them in your hands and with your gear will give you an idea of how they will pack. Also with the think tanks you can put a lens pouch on the end, to make it so if you're just bouncing between two lenses you don't even need to open the flap.

Personally I'd go with the largest you think you'll need so you're covered if you add or rent lenses or need a little space for a water bottle or to stash sunglasses or something.

I used to have the same Canon backpack. Now I have a Lowepro Pro Runner 200AW and a Think Tank Retropsective 10.

The Retrospective 10 will easily hold your 40D with any one of those lenses attached and will have plenty of room left over for your others and the flash.

Here's mine with a 5DII + 24-105 attached, a 17-40 in the center column, and a Camelbak water bottle in the other column.

Here's one with everything it can hold, but it's really stuffed too full to work out of comfortably.

I personally own a Kata Source-261 PL, and tbh, its the best bag I ever had, friend always envy me (but ist a bit big)

A shoulder-type bag is probably the way to go for on-the-fly access. I use a Crumpler 7 MDH to carry a 5D3 with 24-105mm lens + hood, another 5D3 with 16-35mm + hood, and a 70-200/4 + hood. Nothing stacking, for quick access. I can fit in another prime if I needed to. Pockets for accessories. I use Tamrac cases that clip onto either side of the Crumpler perfectly, for flashes.
