After seeing pages and pages of sample images from the RX1 I'm really debating selling off my T3i and 70-200 IS II to get the RX1. I would love a FF Canon + 35mm L lens but I don't have the money for it right now. I love the look of 35mm photos but I like the extra reach at 200mm.

I dunno.

Any thoughts from people who have switched to FF + 35mm?

Will I regret selling everything for the RX1?

Sorry, you're considering selling a camera/lens combination that gives you a FF equivalent angle of view of 112-320 for a camera that gives you a 35mm angle of view?

Now, I completely understand the appeal of the RX1, and to be honest I could live with just a 35mm lens for the rest of my days, but the question is: could you? Will YOU miss the telephoto?

Also, the RX1 is $2800. A Sigma 35 f/1.4 (which outperforms the Canon 35L) is $899, and a 6D is $1789, so for ~$100 less, you get a FF DSLR and a fast (and very, very good) 35mm lens. This leaves open the option of adding other lenses in the future.

I personally don't like the DSLR form factor; while they're versatile, I find them far too big for general use (mirrorless cameras having come a LONG way), and if I'm going to get a large camera, I'd rather it be a medium format film camera.

You need to ask yourself whether it's FF/35mm + versatility you want, or whether it's a small camera you want.

The main reason for selling the 70-200 IS II is the overall value of it. I could sell it and get a huge chunk of $$$ towards the RX1.
Besides that though, fantastic info. I appreciate your answer.
Honestly I was unaware of the Sigma option. I will take this all into consideration.

Thank you.

The more times you buy gear and sell it to buy more gear... the more money you're out in the long run. Find a system that you'll be happy with that you can outfit to your liking. In 6 months, you'll decide the RX1 is too limited and that you could have a sweet setup with a nice telephoto for what you have sitting in that single camera...

Go through that routine 3 or 4 times and you've ended up losing the equivalent of a new lens just on the hit you're taking in depreciation or due to a quick sale, etc.

I haven't switched but go ahead, it's only money. If you don't shoot sports or portraits or wildlife or macro or have need for anything other than 35mm then it may be worth it. seems like a $3,000 niche product to me

Buy used, and let someone else take the depreciation hit. I've sold probably 50 lenses over the years and the only lens I've ever sold for less than I bought it for was the Sigma 50/1.4. Why? Because I bought it new.

(Good) lenses hold their value very well. Camera bodies, not so much.

I agree with edge100 completely. I made the jump and love the RX1, but it's an individual preference. What I will tell you from experience is that if you do go with the RX1 expect to spend another 1-2K on ridiculously expensive accessories (a viewfinder, thumb grip and soft release button are pretty much essential) and expect problems using studio flash or strobes as the lack of a PC port and Sony's proprietary multi-interface shoe are frustratingly unfriendly to strobe users. On the positive side, IQ is as good or better than my 5DII 85L combo and as the camera you have with you it beats anything you left at home. Good luck!

Note: edge100 I just browsed your website, it's nice to get creative inspiration from a fellow Torontonian. Kudos to you!

Cheers,
Robbym
