Just purchased a Canon 28 1.8 and so far, so good.

I checked a couple sites and the Lens case LP814 and Hood EW-63ii are backordered on many sites (BHPhoto for one).

Any idea on why Canon assecssories are backordered?

It's probably because it's such and old lens design. Canon may not produce them anymore or maybe only makes limited production runs every once in a while. I ordered a Vello hood for mine and it fits well. The only really difference between it and Canon hoods are the Vellos have a textured interior rather than the flocked lining inside to help prevent light from reflecting around inside the hood...well and the price. :)

Honestly lens hoods are all the same as long as the inside of the hood isn't reflective, and the hood isn't so big it gets into the shots. I used this one from adorama. They are reliable and know what type of hoods are good to put on a 28mm. I normally buy Canon hoods, but yes, it's backordered :(
