This herd lives along the Alaska Highway north of Whitehorse, about 10 km from our cabin. They share the area with elk.

Beautiful series. I can't believe they are wild...they look so well fed!

Beautiful shots, Sue; I'm surprised the wolves haven't devoured them.

They are wild and as a herd easily defend themselves from the wolves, coyotes and bears (in summer).

Unfortunately, I learned late last night that the territorial government rounded them up yesterday and has confined them. I've never seen them on the Alaska Highway, usually see the elk & deer on the highway BUT it was the wild horses that were deemed to be the safety issue. They're sometimes on our property foraging for food too but were never a problem.

I remember wild horses along the highway 50 years ago too, so am very sad to see these beautiful animals singled out.

This mare is always on her own in the bush. She does not socialize with the others. I captured her image on 21 Feb 2013.

Wonderful shots; I'd love to see a wild herd like that

I'm not; that stallion looks like he's a pretty capable creature, and the rest don't look particularly docile :D

The color, clarity, and composition of your pics Sue, are just wonderful. Pretty hard to pic out a favorite. They sure do look healthy. Hope they are able to stay in the vicinity.

Terrific shots! Looks like they are having plenty of fun in the snow. I wonder why the mare stays away from the others.
