Thinking of purchasing one, but I don't feel like forking out $300-400.. any good alternative for under $100?

What do you need it to do? I have an l-358, Digisix, and Luna Pro Digital. I use the LPD the most, but they also have a Luna Pro Digital F that can meter flash. I've seen them go for around $100 on eBay every once in a while.

I just want a tool I can rely on once in a while when the environmrnt is tricky.. I know the camera meter is far from accurate.

Thanks for the advice skyline, ill look into those... what about Minolta series? I noticed them online for decent price.

If you look at the B&H web site, (external link) you'll find a couple of meters in the US $100 range.

If you expand your price range to US $200, there are two good and useful meters. One of them is the compact and lightweight Gossen Digisix 2. (external link) Another good meter in that price range is the Shepherd/Polaris. (external link) From having actually used these two meters, the Shepherd/Polaris is more useful and versatile.

So is it an incident meter you are looking for?

The l-208 and Digisix are great because they are small incident meters. The Sekonic is strictly analog (uses a needle) while the Digisix has an LCD.

I love and hate the Digisix - it's accurate and easy to use, but it's also multifunctional. That is, it has a timer, thermometer, and clock. Sounds nice, but it never stays in the metering mode because the buttons get pressed so easily in my pocket. My solution? An Olympus carabiner.

Actually, I'm glad the Digisix's "faults" led me to buying this carabiner. The meter is much more quickly accessible now b/c I clip it onto my belt loop rather than stick it in my pocket.

The l-208 is nice, but I switched it out for the Digisix because I preferred the LCD reading over the needle. Personal preference, but works just as well and accurately.

That said, I now use the Luna Pro Digital the most often now. It's significantly bigger than either the l-208 or Digisix, but it's much faster to use in my experience. It's much easier and faster to get readings from this than the former 2. I also use the Olympus carabiner with this and tuck it away in my back pocket when not in use. Size wise, it's big. But it's not that heavy and I don't even notice it's there when it's not in use.

I don't know anything about the Minolta meters, sorry.

I've thought about this, but I wish it were universal. Maybe use a sticky (but not sticky at the same time, maybe suction type) material to cup the lens. Because God knows I will get the iPhone 5s or 6 (whatever they will call it) and this may not fit.

But for $20, way cheap to buy another one for Iphone 6, 7 and 8. As opposed to a 2-3-400 lightmeter

Yah, but how long will it take for them to come out with one for the next iPhone (if they do at all?).

And the meters I have are all under $200. l-208 is around $125, Digisix around $150. Luna Pro Digital from $100-$200 (depending on your luck with eBay).

A camera meter IS ACCURATE when it is not simply pointed at the variable range of tones that make up a scene.

It is quite consistent if you routinely point the camera meter at an 18% grey card midtone grey target (or some will say, point the camera at a 12% grey card...there is a difference, but most folks don't understand the difference unless it is explained).

A camera meter and a reflected light hand held meter are fooled when they are aimed at targets which are brighter or darker than the midtone tonality grey card.
