The OEM ones are $60 on BHP...even with my older 5D2 I dont want to get random cheap batteries, I just prefer having OEM.

If I had a $3K+ camera, wouldn't even have to think for a second about OEM...

It's like having a $250,000 sports car, but cheaping out and buying fake wheels ;)

Not always. For the bodies you spend X ammount for features and options. But if I can save 832 dollars on batteries I will do it every single time.

Sometimes paying the OEM price is worth it. Other times It is not.

Sure, if you think saving a few bucks on battery is worth risking frying your expensive equipment....

And if a proper OEM battery cost $60, might as well go genuine for a few extra dollars for peace of mind.

This is the same as arguing about OEM vs genuine grip, and people short circuit their camera.

I have never heard of anyone "frying" their camera with off brand batteries. And it's not a "few bucks" BH wants 60... I pay 8. That's 750% more.

And I understand about "cheaping" out. I only use Canon grips because I prefer the OEM feel. As long as you are careful and read about what you are buying you can save a lot of money.

I may live under a rock but I don't remember seeing anyone frying their camera with off brand grip either.

Listen, to each his own. Really. If someone is more comfortable with using OEM than great. But people have misconceptions about the cheaper options

can you point to where that has ever happened? there are reputable companies that make aftermarket products and they are probably made in the same factories that canon uses....but again your personal philosphy wasn't something i was asking for.

Why pay that much?
On my 5dmkII I got them for $10, and while it's not as great has the Canon, you buy two, for 1/3 of the overall price......

They may not last has long, but with 3 batteries, you ain't gonna have any problems.
Just check on ebay carefully, read some of the reviews, i'm sure you can manage to have one that FITS Canon's 5d3 camera!

good luck

You might check with Boeing... it's possible they have a few lithium batteries for sale cheap... of course, you'd have to re-package them! ;)

Good one!

I tend to buy DSTE lp-e6's recently, because they usually sell them in pairs, 2 for $20 (external link).

Been using 3rd-party ebay batteries for years now - none of my cameras have started crackling/smoking yet

Edit: They report to camera. Just read the description when buying on eBay.

I used Maximal Power batteries in my 7D (uses same batteries as 5D3) and they reported to the camera and charged just like the Canon batteries. They can usually be found on EBay fairly cheap.

Good point, I always hear about bad batteries destroying a camera but have yet to read a real story from someone who had it happen to them. I did read a few experiences people had several years ago when the 7D came out of a few (only a few) of 3rd party batteries swelling and being a little hard to remove. Not impossible to remove or causing any camera damage. That said, I personally don't have a problem with good 3rd party batteries like Sterling Tek, have had good success with their batteries. But I have also read of people having great success with cheaper batteries.
