Sure, if you think saving a few bucks on battery is worth risking frying your expensive equipment....

And if a proper OEM battery cost $60, might as well go genuine for a few extra dollars for peace of mind.

This is the same as arguing about OEM vs genuine grip, and people short circuit their camera.

Plenty of Nikon users had issues with their OEM battery...

Seriously, battery tech is nothing new. There is nothing wrong with using AM batteries. Just do your research first.

Although I've never used them in a 5d3, I've used/use Wasabi batteries in my Rebels and 60d (same battery 5d3 uses) with never an issue. Charge in the OEM charger fine and register in the camera.

I have heard about 3rd party batteries having some issues with these new cameras coming out.

A few weeks ago, I would have agreed and suggested Wasabi (the lp-e6 version). However, here is my recent review of them.

I bought two batteries off eBay for $15 when I first bought my 5d3 Last year. They charge and last as long as the canon one does. I've had absolutely no problems with them at all

hey not trying to give anyone a hard time. i know even the guys offering opinions are trying to help. i just have a lot of irons in the fire right now. i'm trying to set up my camera -- dealing with about three other matters concurrently -- and i have two batteries i can't even charge so it looks like i have to buy at least one OEM or AM battery at my local camera store at inflated prices so i'll have an extra if i'm able to blow town this weekend.

i do have a couple of aftermarket chargers on the way. i plan to keep a car charger in my glovebox with one battery and CF card in case i ever forget to bring a card with me or my battery dies. the good thing about a 1d is if i left town for a week i'd take two batteries and no charger and usually wouldn't even touch the second battery, but i know from past experience that these smaller batteries require more planning and therefore i want several spares, and i don't plan to pay $60--$75 for each battery.

so peace...and thanks everyone :D.

I have 2 Wasabi batteries off Amazon that have been great. They read as unique serial numbers on the camera and charge fine in the Oem and aftermarket chargers.

whats the difference OEM vs genuine grip?

From the outside it might look the same, but OEM grips for 5D3 is made of cheap plastic and poorer build, whereas the genuine one is made of the top quality plastic same as the body, and the inside is alloy magnesium, thus the grip is weather sealed and aftermarket ones are not.

And because of that, I had no problem paying $300 for it because it's worth it in the long run IMHO.

FYI my 5D2 mainboard was fried due to combination of afternarket grip/battery which cost me $650 from third party to replace (Canon want $1k+).

You guys are SERIOUSLY confused. OEM means "original equipment manufacturer" as in Canon. The Canon Battery grip is OEM. A non-Canon battery grip would be referred to as aftermarket, off-brand, or even knock-off. Lord have mercy the stupid that flows on this forum.

Yes you are right.

But I guess everyone here knows what I meant :o

Any aftermarket non-canon branded grip is nowhere near the same quality as the OEM/genuine.

LOL They must not be car guys, because car people understand this. I don't see any issues with buying after market batteries.... It would be like running a battery other than whats provided in your car.... it'll still out put the 12V needed to run your car. Besides with all the batteries I've seen pointed out on this forum you have the largest group testing of all the different battery brands out there. These seem to be the most liked though:

http://sterlingtek.com/lp66-canon-lp-e6-battery.html (external link)

As someone already pointed out.

Also I had a AM grip for my 7d and hated every day that I had it.... I gave it (YES GAVE AS IN FOR FREE) to a member on this forum because I hated it that much and went with the Canon grip.... Canon Grips ftw.

for what's it worth i happen to be a car guy have owned my 72 Nova SS since 1989, it has a built 350/410 hp engine and i can turn tools with the best of em. i was being very sarcastic with that OEM remark i made. oh i know very well what OEM stands for. i can sit here and watch the debate go back and forth with this subject. fwiw i have purchased aftermarket batteries for every camera i have owned .i happen to work across the street from a toyota (dealer)repair shop and guess what? toyotas batteries are made by a major us manufacture and is private labled for them! i would be shocked if canon made their own batteries and not a sub contractor. i would never ever buy a heavily discounted canon labled battery, you can bet it is counterfeit. reputably manufactures of aftermarket batteries for our cameras do not need negative comments about their products. please do your research carefully and chose wisely on aftermarket parts. i have one question to ask has anybody ever sent a camera to canon and was told in writing that their aftermarket battery caused a voltage spike and burnt out their main board? not to hijack this thread but i have many aftermarket sd and cf cards that are not labled geniune canon. should i be very very afraid if the card goes southbound and bricks my 5d III the only one still under factory warranty, will canon cover my warranty repair? the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act here in the united states is very powerfull, makes good reading if it makes any sence.

Another vote for Wasabi LP-E6 batteries. Bought mine in 12/11. Registers in my 7D and charges in the Canon charger - just like the Canon battery. Still has 3 bars in "Recharge Performance", unlike my Canon battery which now shows only 2 bars in "Recharge Performance". The Canon battery is one month older.

I picked up two of the Sterling Tek's from Amazon. $14.99 a piece, camera and charger like them fine.

Can you give me a seller name ?

Honestly I get all mine on eBay for about 8 bucks. I have 4 full set for each of my cameras (16 total)

And I have never had any problems with any for the last 2 years. They report just like OEM

Hmmm, that's discouraging  I bought those batteries for my 6D, so far they've been working great, I haven't even bothered charging my Canon battery. I guess if they fail though at the very least I'll have an extra charger with a car adapter ;)
