5D MKIII - How Do I Set It To Back Button Focus?

Finally (!!!) got the 5D MKIII today For the life of me I can't remember how I set the back button focus on my MKII but maybe it's a totally different way. I'm reading the manual but sure would appreciate a quick how-to. Thanks!

Assuming that they set up the CF settings like the 7D, there is a CF setting that shows you a picture of the camera with all the different buttons down the right side, you would use that to assign each control and what it does.

Step by step:

Menu;
Spin little dial until you highlight the 5th Icon to the right,
Spin the big dial down to select custom controls, press set.

There is a bunch you can configure here, but to finish up quickly;

Highlight the first icon, (this is supposed to be a picture of the shutter button) press set
Spin big dial to select the 2nd icon in, for "Metering Start", press set.

Spin big dial to go down one icon to the AF On button, press set.
Select 1st Icon for AF, press SET.

Thanks guys, especially you, Jake, for those step-by-steps! It seems the grip must be a little wider or something on the MKIII because it feels like I need to stretch my finger a little more to get to the AF-On button. Can it be put to the * button instead?

Yes you can re-assign the * button Michelle

1. Select Custom Controls from your menu

2. Using the Quick Control dial, scroll down to the * icon - you'll see the * button light up on the camera diagram

3. Press SET

4. Use the Quick Control Dial again to scroll to AF ( Metering and AF start )

5. Press SET

6. Press Menu Button to EXIT


You may now wish to scroll upwards to re-assign the AF-ON button if you so wish.

In addition, you'll probably also want to set the AF On button to perform AE Lock (which the * button used to do, before you re-assigned it per the above instructions). Otherwise you won't have access to AE Lock and will have BBF on both of the buttons: AF On and *.
