I do not need any kind of lecture on why the 6D is not the ultimate choice for birds. I am in limbo on my next main camera purchase at the moment, and have thought about picking up a 6D for a second body and travel. So I wanted to see if anyone has tried to use one for birding, and what level of success they have had.

If I could get a 6D to use for at least a few months while I decide what to do, and if I can at least get respectable AF performance out of it with the center point for tracking BiF, I can live with that.

Can anyone weigh in?

YES.
My friend Chris (svtmaniac) has quite successfully shot birds with his 6d. He reports the AF is actually very good if you are ok with center point (single point) focus.

I wouldnt hesitate to pick one up if I could. You will have the best Canon camera for high ISO/low light shooting so a large lens would be your only need and you have that covered.

I say go for it.

Yes, with my 400 5.6.

These were all slower moving birds, so it didn't really test the limits of the AF. My main issue during these shoots was my slow SD card (30MB/s) couldn't keep up. I bought a 95MB/s SD card and the difference is amazing. So at least now I can shoot more than ten images before waiting for the buffer to clear.
