According to Raynox's web site, the DCR-250 is:
"Suitable camera lens: f= 75mm* or longer focal length.
*35mm film equivalent."
Does this mean it will not work on the Canon 40mm pancake lens a crop sensor camera?

The crop sensor does not come into it. It's the actual focal length of the lens that matters and add on diopters like the Raynox work best with longer focal length lenses. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lordv/

Then, here it is with the Raynox, also at it's MFD: So it does magnify a little, and you could probably get some good close ups (but not "macro") with this if you really wanted. But it really begs to be used on a telephoto. For comparison, I mounted it on the 55-250 at 250mm: More practical is the ~120mm range, where it gives about a 1:1 image. So it's pretty expected per what the math says. A good bit closer but not quite "macro". I do get 1:1 with the 40mm on extension tubes (didn't get a test shot unfortunately). I guess my black velvet and acrylic setup is not the best test for vignetting. But I don't notice any through the viewfinder. The 40mm has a tiny front element, and it would baffle me if there were any.

Mar 17, 2013 19:09 | #6 Thanks for the test shots. It looks like it's not quite what I'm looking for. I did read a blog or forum somewhere that said it worked fine on a the 40mm lens so that's why I bought it. I can't seem to find the link anymore. I guess I'll just send it back to B&H. I haven't actually received it yet. It's in transit due to be delivered tomorrow, well maybe anyway since we are under a blizzard warning until Tuesday morning.

Here's a shot done with the 40mm pancake lens and the Raynox.
