I have mine mounted on a Manfrotto 055XPROB. I have tested it in the drop notch and it doesn't contact the base. I do however use L plates unless my lens has a collar. Good luck with your choice of tripod. You will love the ball head.

I have no clearance issues. If you are really worried about it, call RRS and discuss it with them. They are quite helpful and will steer you in the right direction. mak65 wrote in post #15726645 I have mine mounted on a Manfrotto 055XPROB. Just to be clear, you guys are putting the stem in the drop slot and rotating it 360 degrees and there is no clearance issue? gordon

For rotating 360°, even the B2-LR40 gives problem with a wider tripod base. Because the release lever hit the base. So when photographing upwards, I have to mount the camera with release lever in front of the camera, and when photographing downwards, I have to mount it with the lever behind the camera.

When using a L-plate on the camera, using the slot is just about photograping upwards and downwards. And then the clamp is sideways, so there is no clearance issue beacuse of the length of the clamp. But one have to put the release lever upwards if on a wide tripod base. The clearance issue is just when puting the opening of the clamp up-down (using a fore-after dovetail oriented plate upwards or downwards). Thanks. That's what I figured. gordon

M635_Guy Member 232 posts Joined Nov 2011 More info | I had the BH-40 with the LRII on my Gitzo 2531. There was a tiny clearance issue with the drop notch, but I use an L-plate so it was never once an issue. An L-plate makes A/S the perfect system. Keeps the weight over the top of the tripod where it is most stable, and is sooo easy. My blog: Enthusiast Photographer

As afoton pointed out, putting the stem in the drop and rotating the clamp 360 degrees wil indeed cause the lever to strike the base. I actually don't use the drop notch (L plates or lens has collar).
