They should look familiar. I set them to your screen shot first thing this morning.

LOL There are only so many things to set up in Photoshop and we're running out!

There are only two things I can think of:

1) The video card somehow is not working well with CS6. The resized and saved image from CS6 looks fine, but the screen print in CS6 of the exact same image is bad. Did you update the driver?
2) Maybe there is nothing wrong with your CS6 setup and your problem is from manual changes you made to your monitor settings. Can you explain exactly what you did for "the monitor is a Dell U2410 & I've matched the monitor calibration both colour wise & brightness to the output from my Epson R2880"?

edit ... a couple more thoughts:

- If your monitor is wide gamut could you have sRGB emulation turned on? If so, try setting it back to the default state, which will be full gamut.
- Did you make any changes to Windows Color Management? You shouldn't need to make any changes there.

Exactly, and with me having a perfectly running version of CS 4 to borrow those settings from you'd think I could just copy them & be all set. Unless someone knows the solution I'll just keep trying every possible variable one at a time hoping I find it. At least for now I have a work around.

I'm still thinking it's your video card (but by now everyone that has contributed is totally baffled so it's now become time to make wagers  ). CS6 is designed to utilize the power and features of modern video cards so if yours is really old or if the driver is way out of date it could be the issue.

If that's not it then I personally would do a reset of my preferences: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4209421 (external link)

I'd use the keyboard shortcut method if it's a pretty fresh install of CS6 where I haven't spent a lot of time customizing the interface.

The Video card isn't that old & I'm pretty sure the drivers are up to date because I get automated updates & remember doing one recently. I'll do the Preferences thing tonight & see how that goes. Re setting the monitor brightness, colours & contrast etc I think that was done in the control panel for the video card but I'll re check that too along with the setting for Wide Gamut.
I haven't made any changes (that I know of) to Windows Colour Management. I'll also verify that the video driver is up to date.

SOLVED THANKS TO YOU PEOPLE. Video card driver is up to date Deleting the PREFERENCES file cured it. Don't know what was wrong with it considering I hadn't made any changes until I knew I had a problem & those I made were reversed if they didn't show an improvement. The new defaults seem to be working correctly both when opening an existing jpg or a CR2 & then sending it straight to the PS work area.

Bob, our 6:00 news says there been a huge pile up south of Edmonton, and they also showed another just outside Saskatoon (lived there in 61-63). You must have far worse weather than usual for the start of spring. Hope it improves big time.

Fantastic! Glad you got it fixed since this was a really bizarre one :)

I waited until 7:15 before bothering to drive home from work to avoid the carnage. The biggest pileup involved around 60 cars on the highway south of Edmonton. I heard over 100 were injured with 22 being set to hospital. The roads are a mess.

That figure is LOW based on the reports here but you know how then news likes to blow things out of proportion. Just happy to know you're safe. One of my customers / friends works at Fort Mac & just returned Tuesday (he gets a trip home every 3 weeks or so in return for long shifts at normal pay rates) so maybe he's getting a day or 2 of rest. Hopefully winter will soon be over but then we get the mosquitos & in many areas the black flies BUT that's when I get busy both job wise & hobby wise shooting the local R/C events.

THANK YOU for the time you put into this & to everyone who at least tried to think of a solution even if you didn't post your thoughts here. I'm a firm believer in the idea that we don't know it all but as a team we can get the job done.

Larry

Larry, it's great that you solved your mystery problem!

Now, it would be interesting to know what "preference" caused the problem in the first place -- I wonder, but it's hard to say, Dang!

Thought I'd best post an update. Although things are better especially in CS 6 now I've got a blueish tint outside of PS. I need to experiment a bit more before posting my thoughts & conclusions but based on the 2 13 X 19 prints I've run off I know that IF I print straight from PS with my current settings I'm VERY close to what I'm seeing on screen except for brightness. I'll have to go into the video card control to cure that because a screen setting (brightness) of ZERO is still brighter than my print.

Tony there was some form of mismatch in a monitor profile according to the warning I got AFTER dumping the original PREFERENCES file. I couldn't find a saved configuration file so I checked if the monitor menu had a colour setting area where a file might have been stored. When I went through the menus I found one to Reset The Colour so I chose it thinking It would open a control panel of some sort, but no such luck. It did kill the Monitor Mismatch warning but now I have some new background colours on many web pages including this site (using Firefox). On my laptop (which I'm using right now) the message area is a greyish blue, but on my desktop it's now a pinkish with maybe a slight bit of purple mixed in.
I'll try to tackle those issues tomorrow but at least I'm making headway.

Forgot to mention, Bought my very first super fast lens today, an as new 35 f1.4 L for a bit less than the going rate. Until recently I had no interest in the shallow DOF such lenses offer or primes. I'm having a very hard time adjusting to the fact there isn't a zoom ring.

Well it looks like I've got this under control now with one exception, and since I don't need the program I'm not wasting any more time with it. CS 6 & Picasa now show images pretty much identically & better yet I can print form both with EXCELLENT results. I had to turn Color Management ON in Picasa (it had to be OFF before) but Off or On doesn't help Faststone. I removed the old version & downloaded the current version & still get very oversaturated (looking) images in it. I just printed a slightly cropped version of this image at 8 X 10 and let dry long enough to handle without worries & it looks great in natural light & under fluorescent too so again
THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THE HELP.

Looks like you had a corrupted monitor profile.
