It's really easy to get G.A.S. in this place! But then I take a look at threads with what would be deemed modest equipment and realize a really expensive gear won't make me better when people with a Rebel XS and a 50 1.8 are putting out images that make my jaw drop ;)

The kit lens is very nice. The key to using it well is to stay away from the margins of its capabilities. Shooting wide open at 55mm will get you a completely different level of sharpness than shooting at f8 at 45mm.
