Thinking of buying a 7D. Because it has the smaller sensor, crop factor 1.6 (i think) I would like to have guides to help in composition. I know I can activate an overlay grid in the viewfinder but does that represent 8x10 lines?

Also thinking to match it up with 28-135 or 24-105.

Thanks, John

Best Regards, John

Various aspect ratios can be selected with a custom function. They are visible in live view only.

The manual shows which aspect ratios are available in Liveview. 4 x 5 would correspond to 8 x 10.

A viewfinder grid can be also displayed in the viewfinder. http://canoncanada.custhelp.com …in-the-viewfinder-(eos-7d (external link))

Just by eye-ballin the blue aspect lines against the wall I would say that the viewfinder grid lines
could be helpful and would roughly correspond to the red lines I added in this photo............... VVVVVV

The Liveview an option for either 9 or 24 equal sized squares in a grid, but if you are going to use Liveview, the Custom Function aspect lines would be a lot more helpful.

Might want to wait a few months on that purchase as Canon is supposed to be readying a 7D Mark II for release this fall.

Why wait several months for a supposedly new release, if you can land a good deal now on a 7D and can enjoy it through spring/summer?

^This.

Get a refurb 7D today. I got mine at the Thanksgiving sale for $960 and have enjoyed it throughly since. It was in mint condition with a grand total of 140 shutter activations when I received it. And there was talk back then about the imminent release of the 7D II. If you want to upgrade to the 7D II later, you can always sell your 7D.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Got my new 7d last week. Using it with a 24-105. Seems a great partnership.

Kind regards, Kevin

I would wait..Maybe because I already own a 7D! ;)
But if I had no DSLR, I would still wait..

For what I would like to use it for..I would like different Video Features & better ISO Sensitivity !

Isn't magic lantern now available? This would help the video.

I've just dropped my 7D and it's now at the repair centre waiting for an estimate but I'm waiting to see what announcement Canon is making this week about a new body (70D or 7D2) before spending a lot of money on repairing my 7D. If the 70D is announced and the specs are good enough I might just look into one of those instead. If, as I hope, the 70D has similar AF and better ISO handling/low noise than the current 7D then I think that would be it.

7d prices have been dropping faster than the 5dmk2. Keep looking and jump on a deal once it hits your price point.

Those are 2 different cameras you mentioned....you may want to configure your lens setup before you pull the trigger on either one as the EF-S isn't compatible with the full frame 5d's, and the results you get with certain glass differ from a crop body to full frame as well...

aggghhhh I cant make my mind up, I gave my 7D to my hubby, he has it with him at work always. I have a 5DII and a 1DIII and I just sold my 50D today. I can pick up a brand new 7D for $895. I cant make up my mind to do it or not. I always found the 7D files a fair amount of work noise wise and the focus system is nowhere near that of the 1DIII but I keep thinking I need a crop camera for those times when I want to go out and shoot birds at distance etc. Keep wondering about the newer model coming but the price right now is so cheap, less than half what I paid out for my first 7D. what to do
