I have a Cannon T3i and need help with northern lights shots. I am new to this and don't understand a ton, going to read the manual. I get the fact I can't use one of the automatic settings on the ring, this has to be done manually. I tried with a bunch of automatic settings and nothing. Help for a novice please, thanks.

Looks like I can roll:

18-55 glass
800-1600 ISO
F-5.6 (doesn't go any lower)
Shutter :30
RAW format

thank you so much, tripod and camera ready
to go tonight in case....

BTW where did you shoot last night in Alaska?

I live near Fairbanks, and took those photos two nights ago. The Auroras weren't that great in this area last night (yesterday). They were great this morning when there was too much daylight already :)

A friend of mine told me that the Auroras were amazing last night near Sterling and Homer. It's supposed to be good tonight, but it's starting to get cloudy in the interior of Alaska.

Tripod, 15 second, f2.8, ISO 400, Adjust for particularly active or dormant storms.

Adjust accordingly, if you can't go to 2.8, increase the ISO or the Exposure... with modern cameras I'd go for ISO. The shorter the exposure the better,
