Excuse my poor BIF attempt, but is this what I think this is?

Learning To Fly

IMAGE: http://twilightscapes.com/forums/learning-to-fly.jpg

I noticed the nest on the upper platform of the windmill, when I was framing this shot. Little did I know that I would capture what appears to be a bird of prey going after a smaller bird. Is this correct? Anyone tell me what type of birds these are (I know this is a stretch, but I'll post a closer up shot in just a sec - with hopes that might help)?

Not enough info to ID the birds...appears to be meadow larks. I like the scene...the clouds make this shot work. It ties all the elements together. Forget the birds, its a wonderful landscape/scenery photo. My two cents worth.

Both birds seem to be the same type. Only one is much closer to the camera than the other.

I agree. In the extreme crop, the outline of the head is wrong to be a raptor(no hooked beak). I say some type of songbird, or maybe a nighthawk(doubtful though, I'd imagine even in this shot the white spots on the wings would show up). I agree with the poster who said to call it a landscape shot. As a bird shot, it's not too hot due to distance and size of the birds. As a landscape shot that just happen to have a couple birds in it, it's great.

Edit-looking again, I'm sure it's not a nighthawk-even with no detail the wing shape isn't right. Almost looks like a bit of yellow is visible on the belly, meadowlark is definitely possible.

Thanks guys. Just a bit of tongue In cheek with BIF stuff... Just trying to be funny. I was mainly curious if it was some sort of bird of prey (hoping really) LOL.

Meadowlark works for me, just wanted to make sure. Thanks again! 8-)

No problem, some would ask for an ID based on that picture and expect a definite answer-and a lot of us will give as definite of an answer as we can. If it makes you feel better, the big nest at thetop is definitely big enough to be some type of hawk nest. You might watch and see if anything visits it if you want raptor pics.

That would be very cool... Unfortunately I was just passing through and cannot revisit any time soon :-(

Thanks again everyone - knowing it's just two birds and not a hawk or something, ravaging beasts in mid-air, it sorta dampens my enthusiasm a bit. ;-)a
