I have a scenario that I'm hoping someone can clarify.

First, does Canon consider a photocopied/scanned receipt proof of sale? or do they require an original?

Second, if I decide to buy a camera with kit lens, then give the kit lens to my friend and keep the body for myself, can we use a common receipt to register each product in our own name? or do both body and kit lens need to registered to the same name, even though there are separate warranty cards.

Thanks for helping me out.

Have you called Canon to ask them?
They would probabaly have a better idea of their requirements and procedures than someone on a forum.

You don't have a location in your info so it's hard to say what Canon's policies are in your region... If you're in the US or Canada, the warranty info for EOS cameras is available online:

http://www.usa.canon.com …ty_EOS_digital_camera.pdf (external link)

A copy of a dated bill of sale is acceptable..

If you part with the lens, the new owner is no longer the original purchaser and is not covered by the warranty.. But I guess if you're friends and you make the claim, you could sneak by.

Thank's Jim_T, I read the document before posting here, but you answered my question perfectly. We were just trying to figure out if he can handle the warranty issues himself or if I would need to do it. Thanks again.

I always wonder about this because, if you bought something as a gift for someone, obviously the names would be different. Would Canon not honor the warranty because the person who received the gifted item doesn't have his/her name on the receipt? I'd like to think as long there is a valid reciept from an authorized dealer, they should honor the warranty regardless of who is claiming it. (At least I'd hope so!)

This is Canon's stance on warranty on private sales.

If you have the original receipt an it was not registered to another person then it would probably be fine. I can't imagine a gift not being eligible for warranty purposes, unless the item was part of a "Kit" purchase then parted out.

Dear John

Thank you for your E-mail inquiry.

Canon EF and EF-S lenses purchased in Canada or the USA (from a Canon Authorized dealer) and delivered to you in new condition in its original container, is warranted against defects in materials or workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the date of original purchase within North America (only valid in North America - unless otherwise stated - i.e international). This warranty is not applicable for purchases made from one individual to another as the warranty is NOT transferable.

Should you require further assistance, please feel free to contact us

Sincerely,

Gavin

Good day: I have a quick question on warranty transferability. I recently bought a 24-105mm lens from a private party. I notice that the date code on the unit is for February of last year, but I know that the person who owned the lens before me purchased the unit much later in the year than that. My question is this:

Would I have any warranty on this unit and if so from what date? I did not receive the original sales receipt showing when the unit was purchased. It was part of a Kit with a 5DmkIII.

Thanks, John

Maybe I'll have to contact customer support about this. The body and lens have separate warranty cards, there is a common receipt with no name on it and neither item is registered to anybody.
I guess I have to really find out if warranty of the body and kit lens are handled as one item/owner or separately.

I'll post any feedback I receive.
