the hike up there carrying a heavy tripod nearly crippled my back, not to mention the hike back down. In future I'll do a bit of training beforehand, or maybe just leave the tripod behind.

Excellent Pete ... I'd better start getting in shape now then cause I'm planning on toting mine too. Maybe I can talk my wife into carrying it >

Come on Pete , never leave the tripod behind.
Remember, those amazing photos half belong to the tripod.
I know precisely how you feel, keep up the good work.

Excellent shot Pete. The hike to Vernal falls carrying a heavy tripod is a killer. I can no longer do that. You do have to be in shape and be motivated. Looking at your picture it does prove that the trek is worth it.

ha, I know, Vernal Falls is bad enough so I can't imagine how hard the trek up to Nevada Falls will be with it, but I expect I'll attempt it next time we're there. :-|
to be fair to myself, this was my first real hike carrying the thing, so now I know what to expect I'll be better prepared next time. If only the tripod was able to transform into a nice little stool I'd be happy to take it anywhere.

markyb - there is no colour versions. I took them with the 20D and the R72 IR filter which requires 30sec exposures anyway (so the tripod was essential), and they tend to come out kind of blue and purple.
there are various ways of placing a signature on the photos, I just scanned in my signature added the text in front of it and defined the whole lot as a brush, which is then added manually to each photo. I've tried various ways to include it in an action but none of them were wholy satisfactory.

Bluedog - I tried that. Didn't work. she carries the water and that's it.

Try hiking it with a 45lb backpack! I've done that twice on my way to camp at Little Yosemite Valley (external link).

Nice shot BTW!

yep, I might have to do that some day if we ever want to get to the top of Half Dome. No way I'll be taking a tripod up there!
