Ive been shooting college basketball lately, and I have a question about positioning on the floor. For the games I've done, I've sat on the baseline, right at the corner, which gives me a wide view of the basket on that side, but I miss shots and action on the other side. So would I be better off closer to or actually under the net, or is the corner a better location?

I'll be shooting a game on Wednesday night.

There's no ultimate or perfect location. A photographer needs to make the best of any location, hope your view is not screened and try to keep from being run over by players. No floor location can give a perfect view of all of the action.

From just outside the free throw lane.

Same gym. different game, from under the basket.

Basketball's action is unpredictable and what seems like a perfect location for one moment may seem like the wrong place a few minutes later. If you have the luxury of changing locations, it doesn't hurt to switch from place to place.

It's like most sports...each position has it's advantages and disadvantages and each spot will get great peak action...and miss great peak action. If you are allowed to move around I'll change positions each quarter. (Baseline at the 3 point line, as close to behind the basket as you can, and other side of baseline at 3 point line. With HS ball I'll go up in the stands about even with the backboard. But when it's crowded and assigned positions you don't have any choice but to shoot were you're assigned.

You will be in the wrong position 99% of the time. At least, it seems that way. Make the best of the 1% and be happy.

Thanks for the replies, all seems to make sense. And as far as spots, the only restriction is that I can just be on a certain side of the basket on either end of the court, and I can move myself from one side or the other between halfs. It all depends on how early I get there to get a spot. And sometimes there are a ton of photogs, and sometimes not. I was at the team's last home game, and it was also Senior Night, and I was the only photographer there. Weird...

Anyway, thanks again!

That's pretty strange to me haha. Usually our baselines are really really packed. Same rules for us though - one side of the basket on either side.
