Vinz what do the shots look like without processing eg JPEG straight from the camera, I'm interested in the colours it produces. Parents want a camera but they are not into editing just put card in machine and get prints. Lol

Everybody get ready to pile on! I'm looking for some fresh eyes to critique a little of my work.

Since most of my shooting is pretty casual I don't shoot a lot of RAW files and don't spend as much time as I should learning to process them. But I decided to shoot a batch of RAW files and experiment a bit at a recent family Thanksgiving dinner.

So I tried some of the tips I keep reading about in this thread. I upped the ISO more than I usually do to keep my shutter speed up and get more ambient lighting. I overexposed a stop to see if it really helped minimize noise problems. These were shot with only the on- camera flash rigged up with a homemade diffuser. And I think I got some help from a low, light colored ceiling.

So does it look like I'm heading in the right direction running these thru Canon DPP? The first shots are straight out of the camera and the second shots show my editing. I was surprised that some adjustments responded as well as they did and I could pull up more shadow detail than I expected.

These hardest part on some of these shots was trying to compensate for the mixed lighting. Some shots had both incandescent and flourescent lighting the same shot. For the most part I think I straightened them out fairly well and when in doubt I left them a bit on the warm side. Is there more I could have done with the mixed lighting after the fact? Is there even more I could pull out of these images that I've overlooked?

The main reason I use watermarks is for advertisement. A lot of the players will post them on facebook/instagram and I try to place them in places where the watermark will be seen even cropped for social media

Drew I do the same thing with my model shots, it's ugly but watermark the crap out of them the girls put them on FB and twitter so it gets your name out.
It definatly works because I am starting to get models emailing me for portfolio updates etc.

Yep, definitely heading in the right direction. I like portraits on the warm side so that's good for me.

In the last one, you've got the gentleman looking kinda red. Might want to adjust that a bit. The most dramatic improvement was on the first shot, for sure.

To be honest, the watermark was so discrete, I went back and looked hard to see what the fuss was about.

@Stro: Here is a photo of your old neighborhood, I am on Dunlavy shooting towards Alabama.

HEB camera left, the old Fiesta lot (future The Suzanne Appartments) to the right.

Did they tear down all of the other businesses in that strip, too? I lived in the house right behind that apt building at Dunlavy/W. Alabama (end of the street in that shot), for about 6yrs.

Getting groceries yesterday and got this as I was loading the truck up. Just pulled the camera out of the bag, shot, put the camera back in the bag and finished putting the groceries in the car and then the light was gone.

i will try to shoot jpeg/auto mode tomorrow to show you. Now i'm shooting raw only so i turned off the picture style.

I could probably find some jpegs with the NX300.

clay please allow me to share my idea with visual aid since you allow image editing.

mainly i just the fixed the yellow/green cast on the background by desaturating the yellow in the HSL in lightroom. then balance the color and correct the exposure.

If I remember correctly on that last photo, every time I tried to tone down the red in his face her skin started to take on an unappealing yellow-orange cast. so I tried to walk a fine line there and split the difference. I'll go back to that shot and see if I can't find an adjustment with a little more finesse.

The second shot is the one that sort of stunned me. It looks like I somehow managed to add some light just around his eyes and open up the shadows without blowing out some details somewhere else. I think it makes him look a bit friendlier. Just hope I can remember how I pulled that off!

BAM! I do believe you've nailed it there! Thanks for taking the time Vinz! I'd say that completely takes care of the mixed lighting issues. The yellow highlights in her hair were what really bothered me the most in this shot and now they're gone!

I didn't even think to drag it into PS to try an HSL adjustment. But first I'm going to open it in DPP again and see if I can figure out a similar fix using the color curves adjustment.

you're welcome. yah i think DPP should be able to do that too.

Good trick Vinz, desaturating the yellows for the CFLs.

@Stro: They flattened the whole half block... For the last year there were no shops left in the Fiesta mall.
