So how many of you can look at light in a room and guess pretty accurately the exposure? I am being mentored by a wedding photog and he suggested that I practice that to be able to read the light. I tried in my living room and was off by a stop. When I switched to outside, I knew it'd be different (duh) but it was 7 stops different. :O I think it will be a good exercise for me.

I've been trying to do that myself lately starting with what I am trying to accomplish in my shot. Freezing, motion, DoF, etc. It helps determining the ISO range I can use to get the right shutter or aperture

Brenda outside is easy learn the sunny 16 rule and you will pretty much be in the right ballpark most times :)
Eg sunny day = ISO 100 f16 1/125 from this you then adjust to wherever you want, if you google this it will explain much better than me. :)

To go a little more on that, with the sunny 16 rule your ISO and shutter speed should match (approx)
ISO 100=1/125s
ISO 200=1/200s
ISO 400=1/400s
etc.

isn't it depending on the scene and the effect you want? whether you wanna freeze action or control DOF? HSS etc.

Yes of course it is. The sunny sixteen is just a start point that should give you a decent exposure.
So you want depth of field you change aperture to f2.8 and raise your shutter speed five stops that will give you the same exposure..... Easy

Check this out.

That is awesome! Don't think I have the required fire power either. I may start with something "lame" like popping balloons with a pin, breaking things with a hammer, or something.

That's what I was thinking how it worked. How big is the sensor hole? Might be a chore to aim the laser correctly from afar depending on where it's needed.

You are right, the laser sensor is small - only about 1/8" - so yea, for long distances it will be a challenge. Should be no problem though for 10-20' I think.

Yes, I'm aware of sunny 16. Moony 11, too...or something like that. Lol
It's just good for me to engage the ole brain a little bit more so I have less "what in the world happened?...oh yeah..." moments. ;) When I shot outside earlier I was at 2.8 and neglected to think about sunny 16, I was trying to see if my eyes could "see" how many stops were different from inside the house. Either way it was kind of fun. :)

A bona fide cutthroat blade! Wow!

Last one I saw was when I was in Berkeley doing my PhD. I used to go to a Hawaian barber who used the cutthroat blade to cut hair. The results were fantastic... when he was sober! He was an alcoholic...

I figured out that by 1300 he was blotto! So I always booked a morning appointment! :D
