I used to like the saying "It's better to burn out, than to fade away". Now that I'm burned out, I don't like that saying.

Did an experiment for you guys today with pixel king if HSS works. Also tested (again) my trusty demb-flip reflector.

here's the setup(i know it looks dangerous, silly sony flash HSS won't work if you unfold the flash up even just one click, no HSS on bounce. hate that!)

here's the ambient as i see in EVF and real-world (see with native lens, the A7R AF is not bad. this is not manual focus and it was snappy.) Maybe the AF assist on the pixel king works though.

here's the result at 1/8000th sec(to test if hss is working) ISO1250

see how minimal and soft the shadow is. the shadow also tells us there's some light throwing from the front.

the shadows at the bottom of the canvas frame is darker which means if you are outdoor your wasting so much light going to the air. in the case, tilting the demb a bit more will help i guess.

thoughts?

Vinz, looks good to me, just like a little vignetting which I like anyways. It helps that background is darker color though, I would think on a white background (when shooting high key for example) the top curtain shadow will be more pronounced, but with your 36 megapixels you can always crop it if it is ever an issue. I think you are giving it too much thought :)

By the way, Sony Alpha A7s coming in July - full-frame and 4K-ready :) It's "only" 12.2 megapixels but larger pixels mean killer low-noise high ISO performance. ISO range: 50-409600. Just saying ;)

actually my pixel king trigger just arrived yesterday. it's more of an HSS test.

i know about the A7S even before buying the A7R. i think it's more of their videographer audience. if you sample down the 36mp to 12mp, it gonna look the same i guess.

the ISO sensitivity is a killer though. but for professional work, you are not going to use a very high ISO.

just my thought.

Which pixel king did you get Vinz is the new one with built in controller on the transmitter?
I have the previous ones and hate them!! They will do hss but are pretty unreliable and don't fire every time also I hate that when you take the trigger off the camera it seems to reset the in camera menu :(
Time for pocket wizards pluss3's as I don't use hss that much really funny thing is I have a set of yn' 603's as backup that never miss a beat.

If you dont need hss and use manual flash, stick with the 603s... Pretty reliable.

The king pro is not available for sony.

Yes i have some miss fires. Maybe that's the reason. Thanks for pointing that out.

603's are ok as back up but will only sync to 160ss can't get them to work at 200ss. I'm waiting to see the yn 622 tx when they are released but will probably go pocket wizard in the end.

Just test them and see how they go, they might be different on sony. I have found that they don't like rechargeable batteries. It's a shame really as the hss works well on canon but the amount of miss fires I keep getting makes them unusable for commercial shoots.

It's the new controller coming out the Nikon one is already available, you have full control over your flashes from on top of the camera via the trigger. They look awesome. :)
Texas......lol :)
