I think I've been leaning on the contrast too much, lately. Still trying to get used to using my 40inch for editing again after being forced to use the laptop for about 4 months. Really like your last shot.

If you set the range in Levels so that the blacks and the whites barely touch the limits of the histogram, the contrast is ok. Then, if I want more/less light in the photo, I play with the Gamma. Lifting the shadows in Darktable can only help for small changes. Then it becomes unrealistic, so I don't use it. Never really tried using levels for that. Might give it a shot, on my next batch.
