I hate people who put so much value on boxes that I have a closet full of empty ones in case I never need to sell a lens.

Can it get tedious to keep all those empty boxes? Sure can. But they undoubtedly give your buyer a sense of completeness and thus they will be willing to pay more for your item.

I used to keep the boxes to all my gear just in case I decided to sell things. Then one day I realized I was losing all sorts of closet space to empty boxes. So now theyre all gone.

I recently sold some gear locally and I had a guy compeltely back out of a sale because the item I was selling didnt have a box. The item was in brand new condition, sold at 75% the cost of new, and I was even willing to travel two hours by train to meet him. Everything was going good until he realized I didnt have a box.

I just dont get it. Why does a box matter at all?

I have bought all my camera gear used. Some have boxes and some don't. The ones that do, I keep for future sale and the ones that dont, It doesnt matter.

My opinion, the boxes give you $10 more on a $300 item. If it took up precious space, I would get rid of it.

I think its the difference between a collector and an actual photographer.

Seems true, but it's entirely possible to be both.

Maybe. It was just a 100mm f/2 haha. If it was a perfect condition 50mm f/1.0 then I MIGHT be able to understand. However its a lens that is still produced to this day and will probably be produced for the next 20 years.

Usually keeping the boxes and all original accessories (e.g. manual) are good idea for resale value.

I wonder if there's any other hobby or profession where buyer used used equipment expect to get original packing material.

Cars...you buy a set of wheels, a carb or a steering wheel, you generally don't give a crap about the original packing materials. ;) Same with whole cars...some OCD owners will give you the original bill of sale and crap, but, really...nobody cares.

I don't know what's being "hated" here, the guy who tossed the box out or the person who put together the silly "poster"...

But seriously a heads-up to the OP windlight, if you don't "own" that pic then it's against POTN rules to post it -- you can provide a link, so please edit your post.

With a link, maybe say a bit about what you're linking to and we can decide whether to spend our time/bandwidth looking at it!

Bikes...no one buys a used bike demanding the box it came in. Same with bike parts...I've bought tons of shocks, derailleurs, wheel sets, etc, etc...the thought of asking for the original packaging for stuff like that is laughable...
