Hi,

New to flash photography and Nissin Di 622 Mk II. When I switch on the flash, I can hear a 'reasonably loud' sound of flash zoom being adjusted. But after that, I dont hear the zoom being adjusted, when I change the flash zoom settings in camera flash menu from auto to other FL range or vice versa. There is no sound or movement of the motor when the camera flash zoom menu is set to "Auto". I gave a closer look while changing the FL of the lens, but it seems it is not working. Am I missing anything?

If I pull the inbuilt flash difuser, the zoom motor works (extends).

I've tried it with YN 622C as well and the behaviour is the same.

I'm using crop sensor body and both EFS and EF lenses. I'm yet to test if this happens with EF lens as well. Just incase this information is needed.

I don't have a Nissin flash but I would point out the following:
1) The flash will only zoom with the lens when pointed straight forward, not when angled up or sideways.
2) When you zoom the lens, the flash will not change its zoom setting until you half-press the shutter button to send the data to the flash unit.
3) The camera's flash menu may not work to manually adjust the zoom setting on an aftermarket flash. You may have to make adjustments on the flash unit itself.

Guess what, last evening I spent almost 3 hours (during my office timings) reading most of your posts on flash photography and few tests you did :) lovely experiments...

Thank you for the information!
