Do you ever find that it goes up to unacceptable levels? I try to stay below 800. Where are you selecting EC from? Back lcd on the camera, or a menu item? I've never used it. I always thought it only pertained to flash use.  You can set an upper limit for the auto ISO. I set my auto ISO to 1600 but you could easily set it to 800.
