Details regarding the diminutive Canon EOS SLR surfaced today on canonrumors.com (external link)

Here's a little chart I made comparing the relative size & weight w/ batteries of the new body to various other Canon bodies on the market today.

I'm not certain which market they are trying to appeal to though. Why have a small body when the lenses are large? What do you guys think?

Only 50 grams heavier than a NEX-6, and cheaper too, right? Sounds legit.

With the pancake lens it could be really cool.

Here's a thought... I wonder what percentage of Rebel-series owners never buy any lens beyond the kit lens, or perhaps the "double lens kit" of the 18-55 & 55-250?

If the "new" 18-55 kit lens also supposedly coming with this camera is reduced in size a bit as well, it would make a fairly compact DSLR.

Does such a camera have a market in light of the smartphone & mirrorless competition? BFOM, but I guess we'll see. One thing seems true, though... this camera is not targeted at the typical POTN member.

Even if the new kit lens is smaller, I doubt it'll be pocketable in size, the EOS M isn't. It's curious how Canon is going the route of making a smaller DSLR rather than making a better mirrorless camera.

True, but hardly any (none? IDK; haven't paid that much attention) of the other mirrorless cameras with a sensor larger that 4/3 are truly pocketable with a zoom lens that covers the same range attached, either.

Curious indeed.

I'm really liking the thought of a compact mirrorless instead of a DSLR. I think it would be fine for my style of photography. The only problem is I have some nice Canon lenses and also some nice (and small) Pentax primes from my Pentax film bodies but both the Canon and Pentax mirrorless offerings are disappointing compared to the competition.

I'd love to see one of those! And a lens cap 35mm f/2.8 while they're at it.

It's interesting that the weight of the new EOS is within 1g of the M and EF adaptor.

I know a few people who would love to have DSLR speed autofocus in a package this size, even if the lenses make it larger than a mirrorless setup. If canon made an EF-S 22mm pancake (35mm equivalent) to go with the 40mm pancake, it would be a great camera to carry every day, but still with the ability to work with the larger, higher quality lenses available in EF mount.

This would be a perfect 2nd body to my 7D and at a very small weight penalty to my backpack.

I use my old Pentax-M lenses on my Panasonic 4/3 and they work great except that with a 2x crop factor it's hard to do any wide angle work.

The EOS-M is about the same size as my Panasonic, has a larger sensor so the crop factor is less of an issue, and I read somewhere that the Magic Lantern software adds 'focus peaking' which makes it easier to manual focus. I've really been considering grabbing an EOS-M.

Based on what I am seeing here, I'm not sure that I 'get' this EOS-B. I'll just have to wait and see what the real specs of it are.
