Been reading a few posts and as time and technology move on you never quiet find the same scenario .

I'm off to south of France Monaco, Cannes etc and Paris

I think I'm sorted on lens choice, the 17-40 and 24-105, but I don't know when body to take, the 5d classic or 7d,

5d offer full frame
7d offers better iso, flash

I am travelling with family so have already made the choice to leave 70-200, 580, and tripod at home

So which body for family shots and tourist city break shots

In all these places (I have been there) 17 mm is not wide enough even on a crop. Big buildings and narrow spaces of old European towns just ask for ultra wide. I have a crop camera, and always bring both the 17-70 and the 10-20 there. So with your choices of lenses you may want to bring a full frame camera. In fact, in my view, it is a perfect combination.

Forget about the flash, the built-in flash is very weak, and is basically good only for fill light. Besides, you cannot use them indoors anyway, no museum allow flashes, and many places are just too big inside for a flash anyway.

Id say take whichever one you are most comfortable using.

The are quite different in their features so again id go with whichever you enjoy and are the most comfortable using.

Personally id vote the 7D for all photographs where the lenses you have go as wide as needed. Then and only then, when you need to go wider would i use the 5D.

How many really wide shots do you think you would take v's everything else?

Maybe take both?

Travis.
