Preston, great compostion. I am sure that you enjoyed your trip to Italy.

Hmmm....I see you got the 17-40L. I remember back in May of 2005 you were still debating whether you should get it. Congrats!

To Leorooster, good memory!! Yes, I was debating between 10-22mm or the 17-40mm...I like the wide angle of 10-22mm, but don't really like the EFS mount (limited upgradability). As you noticed, I finally purhcased 17-40mm and I absolutely love it. I just sold my camera recently and preparing to upgrade as well (either the 20D replacement, or 5D, pending the spec of the 20D replacement)...the good thing about 5D is that it's FF and my 17-40mm will become truely wide-angle!! (the downside is that my 70-200mm will not be long enough, even with the 1.4x extender)

The solution is having two bodies....one FF for the wide side and the cropped one for the long end............Yes, that's what I am going to do as I am getting tired of changing lenses. I am considering getting the 5d as a second body, but want to wait a bit as the price is coming down. I can't imagine how the 17-40 would be like on a FF body;) ...........17-40 on 5D and 100-400 on 20D....YES!:) :)

Good suggestion. But I probably won't go this route as I prefer changing lenses than carrying two camera bodies. I'm also considering selling my 70-200mm lens to get the 24-105mm for general use lens and then 100-400mm to fit the FF 5D for the long end (you can see I'm already leaning towards 5D...:))

There was a 15% off on 5D at Dell couple days ago and it was tempting, but I will wait for the new 30D/50D announcement in February to decide and I'm sure the 5D pricing will be lowered a bit around that time (not too much though).

BTW, how do you like your 100-400mm? Like the push-pull zoom? How do you compare that to your 70-200mm quality/sharpness wise?

If you are getting the 100-400L, it makes sense to sell your 70-200. I am planning to sell mine in the near future as well. The 24-105L is a great walk-around lens, which is on top of my "to-buy-list" :). As for the 100-400L, all I can say is that I love it. The push and pull zoom is in fact a lot faster than the twist zoom in practice. In the first week after I bought it, I didn't like it that much, but once I got used to it, it's very fast zooming from one end to the other. As for the sharpness, many people said that the 70-200L family is a notch better, but quite frankly I haven't seen any noticeable difference. I think if you need longer reaches, you don't really get a lot of choices. You either get the 100-400L or the 300 f/4L + 1.4xTC (or the 400L, but it doesn't have IS). I chose the 100-400L because I like the flexibility of it.

Hmmm.....I'm leaning towards the 5D as well, but like you, I will wait to see the new X0D before I make the final call. For me, because I will keep my 20D, getting a FF makes more sense to me. Just wish the price will drop more!

Good comments about the 100-400L. If I'm going to get the 100-400L, then there'll be some overlapping with the 24-105mm & 100-400L. Plus I starting to feel not enough reach with the 70-200mm (get worst with the FF 5D) even with the 1.4x. BTW, do you know if the 100-400L can be used with the 1.4x and still able to autofocus without tapping the pins? The 300L is probably too heavy for me, and too limiting (no zoom), but I heard quality is really good, even with 1.4x.

Anyway, some major upgrade planned...and sounds like you're doing the same!!

You will lose AF if the Canon 1.4xTC is used with the 100-400L. However, I know many people use either the Tamron or the Kenko 1.4xTC because AF can be retained. I also heard that the quality of these two is as good as Canon's. I will look into it since I really want to get a longer reach with AF. Will let you know how I like it when I get one :)
