I have been bitten by the fast prime bug and have a desire for the Sigma 35mm 1.4 and Canon 135mm F2 lenses however I use my 5Dc mostly for taking pictures of my kids, one of 4 and the other is 2 so they don't stay still for long. I also have a desire for the 5D MKIII which I now have the money for (sold my 1D MKIII as the file quality did not amaze me as I had quite expected). The 5D MKIII's multiple focus auto points and far superior low light capability blows the 5Dc away in such conditions as shooting fast moving kids at play. As they grow I also want a capable enough camera to track them whilst running at their sports day events and whatever sports they end up playing as they get older.

As you can see from my signature I have some suitable lenses to use with the 5D MKIII however I would like to know if any of you may have been in a similar dilema as me and chosen to keep the 5Dc and buy fast glass, or bought the 5D MKIII and used existing glass....whilst waiting to win the lottery to afford it all !!!!

In your shoes I'd have to go for body upgrade. You already have a nice kit of lenses, and catching those kids on the move sounds like a job for the 5d3. Have you considered swapping your 70-200 for a 135?

For family and kids I'd just use a point and shoot or a Fuji X100 etc. I would even bother with any extensive gear, but that's just me.

It really depends on what matters to you. The only big three reasons (lots of small ones that didn't hold much barring on my decision) that I chose to buy a 6D over a used 5Dc was the rear LCD screen, ISO ability and video ability. If these are two things that don't matter much to you, stick with the 5Dc imo.

I'de say body upgrade as well. you need more DOF, not less, which the sigma is good for. I think at their current age, they arent doing much sports, so tracking them isnt high priority. There's a lot of do-overs with small kids, but sports is a little different because you really dont do over a game.

Personally, would LOVE to have the 5D3, but AF not super imperative at the moment. I will get it one day as my son is the sports type.

Id go for the 5DIII as well. I'm along the same lines as you I want a 5DIII, however I also want a 70-200 2.8 II so for me I'd get the glass first. Seeing as how you already have what I want ( and its funny because I have the lenses you want) I'd get the new body for the same reasons you listed. Superior AF and better ISO range.

That was probably very confusing. Forgive me, Im sick and it late :(

I also would go for the 5D3.

I've used a 5Dc for about six months and the 5D2 for about a year before buying the 5D3. The 5D3 is definitely worth it for the AF and improved ergonomics of its controls.

Personally, I would go for new glass.

But since you have young kids, having video capabilities would be nice.

+1

But for a casual shoot a similar solution could be equally sufficient:

Go for the body upgrade. It is time. You will appreciate the 5DM3's AF and video capabilities.

Thanks all for some fantastic responses, really constructive and helpful, I appreciate your time. Just one small spanner to throw in the works if I may. How about the 6D and the 135mm f2 for the price of the 5D MKIII ????

OK don't have a dig for moving the goal posts, only trying to stimulate some more views and guidance ????

Cheers

Sounds like a solid idea to me ;)

Don't let people scare you, the 6D's AF is much better than people would lead you to believe. Certainly better than your 5Dc ;)

I really dont know how true this is. It's still non cross types on the outer points, and the focus spread is basically the same (which may matter even more than AF accuracy). My 5D2 outer points are fairly reliable, but the spread is just so lame.

the rest of the features are good, but ts is looking for AF improvement, and really should stay focused on goals.
