How often do you need it at 2.8? The 15-85mm is probably a better general purpose lens because of its ability to go to 85mm, and that 15mm is much wider than 17mm.

I shoot mostly natural light, so the extra stop is used very often. I also use it a lot for the shallower DoF that if provides in some situations. I don't own any truly fast lenses, but I do have 3 which go to f2.8. They seem to get more use than the slower ones unless I need the reach or wide angle of those 2.
