Repairing a dropped and broken 5DMKII

Someone I know knocked their 5DMKII and 24-70L over while it was mounted on a tripod. The damage is tragic as you can see. I was thinking of buying this off him and was curious if anyone had ever sent a camera this badly damaged in for repair and what your experience might have been.

Any suggestions on a fair price to offer would be appreciate as well.

that looks sad.... the lens might be more repairable than the body (depends on what the other half of it looks like)

$20 for novelty value.... ($30 if he includes batteries & charger)

Its impossible to gauge the repair costs without a quote from canon. It may be less than you think, it might be totally trashed. Look on ebay and see if you can find what parts cameras are going for so you have some sort of worst case scenario value. Or you could work out a deal where you price it conditionally on your repair costs. If its fixable you pay X amount, if its total loss, then its Y.

Send these pictures into Canon Repair service. They should tell you if it's fixable or not. I wouldn't buy it unless I know how much it's going to cost to repair it (if it's even repairable).

I suspect anything is repairable, but at what cost?

Is the owner going to get an estimate? Or does he just want it gone?

For both of them it might not take much more than a new frame/body, assuming everything inside is actually OK.

Best thing is to send it into canon for a quote.

If it was a car the classification would be a "Total Wreck" off to the camera bone yard.

Canon won't give any kind of estimate without sending it in. It does look quite bad though. Still, for the right price it would probably be worth seeing what could be done. The question is, what's the right price?

I hate to say this but WHY does everytime something like this happen it is always someone I knew or a friend of mine, just say it you mess you your camera,,, geez it happen Now contact canon and see what they say, and just pay the damage bill.

Oh hell, if I had a 5DMKII and 24-70L there's no way I'd let it end up like that (and it would be insured too).

It looks more like it was thrown out a building!

I dropped a lens once, and it was not damaged too much.
A body is usually strong!

It does seem like a heck of a lot of damage. From what I understand, it was up on boulders and went over and fell down below on more rocks. It looks like the force of the impact tried to drive the lens mount through the body.

Keep in mind, he didn't ask me (or anyone) if they wanted to buy it from him. I saw his post and picture of the broken camera on Facebook and asked him about selling it. It's not a scam.

Wonder what kind of internal damage? Need the estimate. Looks like more than a new case & screen.

Just heard back from him and it still powers up. He didn't mention if the shutter would still fire or not.
