I'm looking for some free software I can use on my PC to view the estimated focusing distance. When I upload to Flickr I can see it. When I have looked in Lightroom, Faststone or Irfanview I can't seem to find that Exif information.

anyone have suggestions so I can easily check that? I understand that data is not the most accurate but I look to check it on some bird photos I take for relative distances.

Thanks
Doug

As you've noticed, you don't find that info in most "standard" processing apps, including Photoshop and Canon's software DPP. I think it's partly due to the fact that 1) you don't get it from every camera (but I don't know the specifics there) and 2) as you've noted, it tends to be very unreliable.

I do know that some apps do show a ton of Exif info including "subject distance" (if available. I used to have one on my old system but it's gone and I forgot the name! Maybe someone can chime in!

The only one I know of that shows this data is the FxIF plugin (external link) for FireFox.

Oh, and Jeffrey's Exif Viewer (external link) - an online tool that shows every little bit of info - including processing information.

If you are shooting in RAW then RAW digger will also show you "ALL" of the EXIF info for a file as well as all of the other interesting information that it can show you, including a TRUE RAW histogram, with all 4 colour channels as they come off of the sensor. It is four channels as the Bayer filter array has four filters, one red, one blue and two green, the histogram shows both green channels separately.
