Belonged to my parents, it has an old, gold trimmed frame, and has deteriorated a bit. It is from some time in the first half of last century.
Probably little hope here, but I'm wondering if anyone knows where/how I might be able to recognize the artist's name on the bottom left?
I played with the contrast and color to help bring out the lettering in those areas.

Thanks

Got a macro lens, or a scanner? Might be easier for us if the relevant areas were larger. Looks like a G - - - Smi---- or similar from what you've posted.

What do the letter in the name look like to you? Pretty hard to make out here...

"Smillie" Looks real.
Excellent job RoxyJ. You might have a match.

Here is your image's signature on top and G.H.Smillie's signature from his painting: "Late Afternoon in CT"

If truly him, you have one precious piece of art at hand. Check it with experts.

Here is the picture, not too sharp since I had to downsize it. I'm going to the library to see if I see it in one of his books. I have another by the same person, of an ocean surf.
I think they were given to my parents in the 1940's, probably as a wedding gift, and perhaps not worth a lot back then. If by Smillie, they may have lost value, because they are very faded. I hurts to know there were hanging with no particular care, around our home all the years.
The picture has meaning, because it looks just like the middle Georgia cotton farm area my Mom was born in, and my grandfather did fish in such a creek boat in local creeks and the Little Ocmulgee River.
I'll let you know what I find out.
Thanks for the help. It's more then I thought would be available. I'm a pretty good photographer, but can only wish I had the ability to recognize such an artist's work so easily.

It is indeed George Smillie. I haven't yet taken it to a local pro, to evaluate it, but It is a print and badly faded, and I wouldn't sell it.

I've uploaded another picture one from Mom's home. It's a nice looking (badly faded) surf picture. I also sent an enlarged copy of the copyright and name, in hope someone can recognize the name. Looks something like 'A J Riggs', and copyright looks to be 1800 or 1900.
There's writing beneath it, near paper bottom, but too far gone to read.
Thanks

Congratulation on finding the Gem within.

I fully understand you and Yes Enjoy the piece for as long as you can in family, only do you job in terms of maintenance, humidity, light etc so that many generations of yours can enjoy that too.

Love the happy endings!

Thank you.
In relation to the surf picture, here is a picture of the signature(?) I found on the lower rt corner.
Can anyone recognize the name?
Thanks
