Auto-ISO for birds and other animals like squirrels?

Yes. I use Manual mode on the dial to set my desired shutter speed and aperture.
Then I set auto ISO with a max of 1600 to let the ISO float to where the camera needs it to expose in the middle.

Check my flickr page in my sig for hundreds of pics taken this way.
