Hi guys,

I recently purchased a Canon A610 Digi. Great camera, no problems.

I also recently purchased a new Sandisk 1GB SD card off of Ebay. Now, when I format the card (first format ever on this brand new card - using my camera to format BTW), it says that I have 499mb of available space (basically the size of a 512MB SD card). I tried to re-format the card and still, I have 499MB of useable space. I know for a 1 GB card I should have close to 970MB of space.

So, my question is ... what is up with this? Is this a common Sandisk problem or something. I'm a newb with digital photography, so I don't know anything about this.

Thanks for any help,
Matt

have you tried the SD card on other devices to check if the size is correct? it could be a 512MB Sd card which has a 1GB label.

I've never heard of that before. Have you tried putting it into a card reader in a PC and formatting it there? After that format in the camera again.

I hope it's not a 512 card that's been relabled.

That's what I'm worried about. Do you have a card reader? Open it in My Computer and see what it says.

I was also wondering about the 1GB card being labelled as a 512 MB. The label isn't EXACTLY straight, and I did buy this off of ebay (basically, an open package but the seller claimed that it was new). I don't have a card reader, but if I went to a photography store, do you think they would be able to read my card and tell me whats up?

Thanks!

They would, but it'll probably boil down to whether they want to serve you or not. I think it's probably the same throughout camera stores in all countries. Unless you flash the money and show intention to buy something, they simply can't be bothered.

If you're a regular, that changes things though.

I hope it's a fixable problem...it'll stink if the seller decided to cheat on a card.

Hmmm...I'd contact the seller and ask why they have given you a 512MB. Take it up with ebay if you need to

Aw man you got royally ripped! NEVER buy memory cards that say they're opened. It's not worth it. Put in a paypal dispute for item not as described, and you'll have your money back in about a week.

Buy a card reader, they are inexpensive enough. BTW, I just bought my wife the same camera, A610.

Hi guys,

I was debating buying a card reader, but why should I? I bought a card off Ebay so I could save money (I'm a student, and I blow most of my money on my car anyways), not spend more (in the long run).

But yes, the card was 100% new and did have a clear sticker seal and supposedly was "never opened." The seller also claims that she will warranty the card for 30 days.

I will bring it to a camera store and use their card reader to check the size of the memory card.

I have sent an e-mail to the seller, but I have not received a response yet (starting to get fishy, even with the sellers 100% positive feedback).

Thanks for the help guys!

I think I paid less than $10 for my card reader. It's a good thing to buy for a lot of reasons.

You can get card readers really cheap these days. I would suggest getting one. It makes getting the pics from the camera to the computer really easy and wont wear down the batteries of the camera. The A610 uses AA batteries right? For the cost of 3 4-packs of AA batteries you can get a card reader and save the power for taking pics. As fas as the memorey card goes, if you can confirm that the card only has 512mb on it, send it back to the seller and get your money back! Good luck.

The card has been established as fake in this thread, in which I've posted pictures of a genuine Sandisk 'blue' SD card.

A USB 2.0 card reader is well worth having. You've a couple of choices - either a little one that takes just SD cards which you could leave in your camera case (though I haven't tried one, this (external link) looks particularly neat), or one of those universal ones, which can be very useful, especially if a friend visits whose camera uses a different type of card.

Enjoy the camera, do hang around to let us see the results.

David
