Finally, my first outing with my fixed 20D

I was going to go last night, but had no energy, so decided to go out tonight. Chose my favourite beach, Piha. Driving through the Waitakere Ranges, the clouds set in, very low, misty even. So change of plan, instead of capturing a sunset at Piha, decided to visit the Kitekite falls nearby. The light was incredibly low, which was good for slow water movements. I wasn't in the mood to get down very low, and capture good angles, so out of 25 shots this evening (that's gotta be a new record, for least shots I've ever done), I only liked a couple.

This is the stream after the falls - And I see it isn't level, typical :D

The falls themselves, although there has been no rain for a week or so, so there's very little water.

Well, glad to have the camera back, and hopefully I can capture the sun once it comes out.

Just for comparison, there's a couple older shots with my old Sony V1 point and shoot. On the "old" digital page, I have

Gives a better perspective of the waterfalls.

I was perhaps 25 metres from the falls, but the little outlet seen in the foreground, was only 1metre in front. Surprised the DOF captured it.

The first one's great! The second I don't like so much, it just seems a little plain compared to a lot of you other work.

Thanks, yeah #2 is boring. There's nothing in foreground in these falls, no plants, nothing.

That's why I tried to at least include the runaway.

Duncan: The prints are due Monday I beleive. Through Camera House, but they send to Viko

Tim: my other work? It all sucks. :p

Adam: That'll give me more incentive to post more. It was great taking LOTs of photos with you during your couple month stay.. And partying in Parnell, ;) and all those ladies...

Haha, don't! I'm now a poor student tied down in England for the next 2.5 years without the means to leave! I'm sure somehow i'll find enough money to visit NZ again sometime though, or if not you can come here once you've gone pro and all that :p

Ahh.. the days where you could just stand in queues, talk loud enough so the ladies could hear my accent and then come up and start chatting to. Possibly the only good thing about being British, oh that and the Fish and Chips :p

Touched up the pics a bit, and also changed the frames, to make them same as forum colour, and keep the text the same.

Maybe this will be my new sharing style, rather than a flat image. :p

Adam: at least I don't need the accent ;)

Actually I like both. The first one is my favorite but I also like the composition of the second shot. Nice work.

That is a great one Waren,it has the feel and look of a rainforest deep in the Amazon.

The falls themselves, although there has been no rain for a week or so, so there's very little water.

Well, you might find yourself that with falls sometimes les is more.;)

Well, glad to have the camera back, and hopefully I can capture the sun once it comes out.

Waren, what was wrong with it in the first place anyway?

Add me to Tim's request for lessons. Mine never came out like that.
Good to see you are happy again with the 20D in your hands.

Would I be correct in saying that you have got a handle on the relationship between shutter speed and apature therefore better able to get correct exposures and the effects you want?

Lets face it, it cant be that you have a better camera. I think its time to dig out all my photography books and start to read.

jgjulio: Thanks mate. I can see you've rushed right past 1000 posts, after posting many great shots around Yosemite. :)

Mike: My HDDs are full. I need to rebuild my PC, and then I can start shooting more. And after a shutter failure, I'm scared now. :p

Dimitri: Yeah it was a shutter failure.. 64,500 shots on my 20D, and KAPOW
I can say 5 weeks without your camera is an eternity! I hope the weather stays fine today. I might like to try a sunset at Bethells.. The first place I did landscape photos when I first had my 20D almost 1 year ago.

Tony: Thanks, I have a new business lined up,
I really don't know what it is. But first of all, the composition, the way you fill the frame of the camera is most important. Then you put in your favourite shooting mode, and get it. These shots came out ultra sharp with the 17-40 and no filter (I wouldn't mind a CPL, or ND filter, maybe with my upcoming B&H order, I'll get some).

Post processing I don't do much either, as I'm hopeless in photoshop.
Usually it's a bump in saturation to give it a nice kick, resize, slight adjustment of levels, but usually don't have to do much. USM at 200%, 0.2, 0, and do it twice, and sometimes had a CTRL-SHIFT-F (fade), to take some jagged edges out.

As for my favourite settings, I use AV a lot, but many of my shots I've used exposure compensation. I usually know, by the scene, say there's a bright object, that I may have to overexpose by a 1/3. It's just habit, but the RAW files come out usually exposed well.

Hope this helps somewhat, but otherwise, you'll have to come out shooting with me.
