possibly upgrade from my t2i to 7d/5dm3

Ok so this weekend I was at my sons event at school. On stage and I was up front. my flash broke so need a new one or fix my current one with the thread up here.

anyhow.. my t2i while serving me well has been seeming to fall short lately.

so first my needs...

outdoor soccer - I have a son on u14 travel so need a long reach. Currently I use a 55-250 and still have to crop in when shooting down field

outdoor hockey - games are mostly night time so i shoot my t2i with a 85mm @ f1.8 and 1/500 and iso 1600

indoor events, kids concerts, fashion show and indoor stuff in general.

I just purchased a new truck so my old play toy ( mud truck ) has to come off the road. I have a friend wanting to buy it and may just sell it. If he takes the truck I will have some coin to drop.

so the question is which way would I be more happier..

7d / 100-400 IS / 70-200 2.8 IS
or
5d mark iii

and one guy says he thought he would still use his 7d for sports (soccer) but ended up finding the 5d mark iii the better choice.

If I purchase the 5d mark iii I will not have a lens for soccer at all and wouldnt have the funds for at least 1 year so not sure if the 5d m3 is the right choice.....
yes indoor and auditorium stage shots would be a lot better...

im just undecided as I will be calling my friend today to see if he wants my truck.

If you can manage to sell your truck and a get a 70-200/100-400 to go along with the 5D3, then by all means!

well I "Could" however dont think that will fly with the wife.. I just started looking and if I could get a 5dm3 for $2500 + $1k for each of the othe r lenses.. that would still net a good amount to hand to the wife.. so that could happen if i could find a 100-400 and a 70-200 2.8 for $1k each...

What is your actual budget? There may be other solutions.

A used sigma 120-300 on your current body is where I'd start... And then hunt down a used 7D...

ok so you still say 7d... the only thing teetering me to 5dm3 is the night stuff... but hey that is why i posted to hear other thoughts..


also my t2i is getting old.. dont know how many clicks but lately it seems to be missing focus and acting up... may need to go in for repair...

7D is just so much cheaper yet is one hell of a camera + you get the 1.6X effect on ie. the 100-400L which would be a massive upgrade to what you have now.

Yes, one thing he can do is go to Best buy and buy one that is already opened product, try it, if he likes ii would be great.
The only thing I don't like about the 7d is if you crop, you will see the grain, compare to the 5d3.

I would get the 5d3 and get a 1.4 converter and a cool lense, or rent one !

With $4500, you can get a 5DIII a Tamron/Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS/VC or Canon 70-200 2.8 non IS + a 2x TC instead of a 100-400. I'd recommend the Canon if you do this due to faster tracking, which you'll need when using the TC.

I added a 6D to my T2i family yesterday. Holy cow what a camera! FF combined with L glass is very impressive. I am going to keep the T2i's for underwater shooting exclusively now because my housing cost as much as 5DIII practically. When the 70D and 7DIIs are announced I will check them out as options for second bodies. Would like to get a cropper with great AF.

Send the t21 in for repair. BUY GLASS 100-400 L New are around 1450.00.The 70-200 2.8 II About 2150.00 from what i have seen. I would save then for another body later in the year. There are some great deals on the 7D. Which will get better later in the year as with the other body's. That is if you can wait

It gives you a very good reach and very good IQ. I had a Canon 100-400 L and tested it against the Sigma on both bodies and the Sigma came out on top. Both have similar IQ but the OS of the Sigma swung it for me. I hardly ever use my 7D, it's in for a repair at the minute and I don't really miss it, and when I do it's just as a backup body. The 5D MkIII's AF system is so good it can be used for everything.

well my budget will be after i put my truck up for sale and sell it... my bud said they maybe getting laid off so he wants to wait.. so i wont be purchasing for a bit so I can wait and hold out...

my flash broke so that stinks.. need to buy another as we have a hockey tournament coming up and my friend wants me to take the pics... with the kids and trophies at the end... so that may get me some cash.. will see...

thanks all for your input... even if i buy another body.. im banking on keeping my t2i and yes send in... as I want to use it for a photo booth and whatever else i buy for action shots....

you can pick up a canon 60d so you can save up (1) more money for buy later the:
Canon 5d Mark III
eventually when drop the price for the release of a new model or buy a good used one and naturally sell the t2i.

Note:
1) Supposely that you can maintain this save up for the next camera ...
On the contrary you can go directly on the Canon 7d for the better AF.

I have 7D with 15-85. I had a great picture of my kids playing soccer and baseball it did a good job. I'm not PRO and not too picky but very happy. It came out great pix of 8x10

If I were you, get 7d, 70-200 2.8 I (not 2) and 70-300L ( or 100-400)
