I finally saw the perfect response to the comment, "Gee, your camera takes great pictures".

Thanks to Shoppesatire (external link), (a subblog of The Shoppe - Actions and Designs (external link)) my new response is "Thanks, I taught it everything it knows."

I'd be like "Thanks. Your mouth makes great compliments."

The camera actually does play a role in whether our pictures are great or not though. That's why we spend so much money on this stuff. The same shot with a cell phone camera might look like ass by comparison, if it was even possible to capture at all.

From personal experience, the best and simplest answer is "Thanks."

IMHO, the above is true only in a limited degree...

A camera simply ENABLES the taking of a great picture. The nut holding the camera is the one who MAKES the great picture.

...just like 1000000 monkeys at keyboards would never result in a single Shakespearean masterpiece.

I read a response that has always stuck with me.

A photographer was doing a shoot for a newly opening restaurant. The owner/chef compliment the results by saying you must have a really nice camera.

The chef made the photographer a nice dinner as part of the payment for the services, and the photographer complimented the chef "This is a fantastic dinner. You must have a really nice stove."

Actually, it's true in the entire degree, since I said it plays a role. I didn't say it was the only factor. The camera will always play a role, even if it's only a technical one such as digital noise control.

I have a wood shop in my basement, and it makes great shelving and cabinets.

Fair enough...my mistake!

Which is perfect, because those tools need a place to sleep! :D

And I'm sure it makes fantastic sawdust, too.

All is relative.

Well.... My camera is a Sigma DP2M and it does take great pictures, doesn't really matter what I point it at, so long as there is a reasonable amount of light, it takes great pictures. Not really very much to do with me, more with Dick Merrills incredible technology.

I guess it is better than 'you need a new camera, that one doesn't take good pictures'.

LOL

I'm using foveon sensors as well. It's kind of hard to take credit for the pictures when you feel it's the sensor that makes so much difference in final results.

I don't understand posts like this. Why not just admit your camera does take nice pictures? Especially if you have a 1 series body with a backpack full of Lenses.

My honest answer would be:

thanks, it does. I spent five years of my life and more than ten grand trying various camera systems and this is the best one I could find
