Well.... My camera is a Sigma DP2M and it does take great pictures, doesn't really matter what I point it at, so long as there is a reasonable amount of light, it takes great pictures. Not really very much to do with me, more with Dick Merrills incredible technology.

So what you're saying is if I were to light one of the walls in my house, and make 100 images of it, that I'd have 100 great pictures?

better cameras make taking better pictures easier.

I have actually, really, and truly had a few of the "great camera" comments. The fact is, it doesn't bother me at all, I smile at it when I reflect on these POTN discussions and how people get all heated up -- 'course it's not "serious photographers" who make the comment.

I have had "serious photographers" say something "similar" when they glance at my gear ("nice camera!", "Nice lens!"), but then again I just smile and say "Yes it is!"!

But say someone has a car like a Corvette, Mustang, or Challenger. Most people would say, "Wow, that's a nice car." I wouldn't find anything wrong with that kind of comment, as it doesn't say anything about the person's driving style. You could also look on Youtube and find a lot of bad drivers in Lamborghinis or Ferarris.

For someone to say "nice camera" or "nice lens" means they might know something about what that gear is capable of and realizes it may help produce better quality images.

Sure, you're echoing what I said, if a photog says "nice camera" I'll smile and say "yes it is"!

Course if I took a "nice car" and won a NASCAR race, I'd expect more "nice driving" comments, but then that's different, more along the lines of the "gripes" we see here, but I still don't have a problem with someone appreciating some of my shots and saying "You must have a nice camera"...they don't "know" photography the way we do here!

When I hear "your photos were amazing" I usually respond with a modest "it's the camera, I love this thing". I've gotta find a better way to take a complement.:o

Funny thing is, most NASCAR drivers will say they had a good, fast car under them and a great crew in the pit. They seldom say something like "Yeah, well, I'm the sh!t. Of course I won."

Except that it's not what you say about yourself, but what others say about you that matters.

I remember one time I strutted around saying "I'm a good photographer". I took a bunch of photos and they all turned out crappy 'cause I had the exposure wrong -- my response was "you sure have a bad camera"!
