Bottom line if said complement-er wishes to go out and buy the same gear they will work out pretty quickly the gear is only a small part of the picture for themselves.

I liked the car analogy.

I have actually, really, and truly had a few of the "great camera" comments. The fact is, it doesn't bother me at all, I smile at it when I reflect on these POTN discussions and how people get all heated up -- 'course it's not "serious photographers" who make the comment.

I have had "serious photographers" say something "similar" when they glance at my gear ("nice camera!", "Nice lens!"), but then again I just smile and say "Yes it is!":)!

That there are two current similar threads on this subject, and that one of the threads was revived after being dormant for more than a year makes a significant statement about the non-photographic neuroses that really drive some of this forum's users.

My sister, the professional baker and cake decorator once told me that my camera takes great pics. My reply was that I thought her oven baked great cakes.

I have been told that my 60D must be a great camera to take photos like this. I just smile and nod and say thanks. (this one was taken with my Powershot A720 IS - 8mp) ;)

I finally saw the perfect response to the comment, "Gee, your camera takes great pictures".

Thanks to Shoppesatire (external link), (a subblog of The Shoppe - Actions and Designs (external link)) my new response is "Thanks, I taught it everything it knows."

I'd like to see you take a great picture with a can of paint. ;)

You probably do have a better camera than the person has who tells you you must have a good camera, and the difference shows in your shots. Not everyone who utters the "nice camera" line is necessarily clueless. I constantly see photos on POTN that my cameras wouldn't be able to produce.

If nice cameras weren't important, the gear lists in signatures here would be much shorter.

Yeah, but we want all the credit for the good photos and we want to blame the gear for all the bad ones and missed shots. :D

It depends.
If someone would tell me my 1937 made Zeiss Ikonta takes good pictures - I'll take it as compliment.
And I would tell something like this to another photog like me, who will buy small advanced P&S in addition to DSLR beast. If it is really good P&S, not like Canon makes.

Damn right. I overcame my gear limitations because I'm an artist...when the shot turned out nice. But dammit even I couldn't overcome my gear limitations as an artist...when it didn't.

:D

I think I need a new camera :(

A slippery slippery slope that leads to new lenses, filters, tripods, ballheads, flashes, flash mods, bags, straps, software, PC/Mac, printer, paper ... :)

I'm new at photography and I started to get a bit ticked off the wow that camera takes great picture comments too. Lol.

A few weeks back we were at my friend's house taking some pictures and every time they looked at screen they kept saying wow that camera takes great pictures! so I gave them the camera and said go ahead take some great pictures with it. But of course as I was handing the camera over I spun the shutter and aperture dials a bit :D and gave my friend the camera so he took a few shots and they were complete darkness hehehe. So he says ok ok maybe photographer has something to do with it. Lol.

I think it becomes more of an annoyance as we get better at taking pictures. If I didn't know how to use the camera setting and use the auto setting I wouldn't care as much. :)

There's an awesome wedding photographer here (I won't name names) who, several years back, admitedly didn't take the camera out of "P" mode for the first 10 gigs. He's got an incredible eye and good people skills; apparently he figured "why complicate things".

On a second thought, may be they were right in first place!
Just give the camera to a four year old and as to go round the house with 10 push on shuttle and then you be the judge...

Yeah I agree. I watched a youtube video and one of the advice given was "don't be a hero" if I'm in a place with constant changing conditions I have no problem using the AV or TV mode. Playing with my dials so people can see that I know how to use my camera is not worth missing a great shot. :D
