Does anyone out there use it instead of USM?

Looks interesting but does not look like it is a plugin. If you are looking for an alternative sharpening method this is free.

Take a look here (external link)and here (external link). Claim to be much better than PS Unsharp Mask. I do all my printing through Q Image and will try to sharpen with DFS for a while rather than USM.

I don't use either Q Image or Unsharp Mask.

Unsharp Mask is obsolete; it was designed for when photographs were digitized by scanning. Now that the majority of photos are obtained directly from digital cameras and not film cameras and scanners, the superior "best practice" sharpening method is Smart Sharpening.

To get the best results from Smart Sharpening it has to be set to Advanced Mode and "Remove Lens Blur" has to be enabled rather than the default "Remove Gaussian Blur." You can get targeted Luminance Sharpening by using the sliders to control how much sharpening is applied to Shadows and Highlights.

That link I provided the author uses smart sharpening but that is only one part of it. It is an edge sharpening method. I made an action and SS is set to lens blur. I got that sharpening info off an Adobe training video. Sorry for being a off topic tvphotog.

I use an older version of Qimage, which doesn't offer DFS.

Regardless, I like to have my images finalized before I start Qimage, except for strictly print-related corrections. Thus, if DPP Sharpening doesn't do, I use FocalBlade (where you can also suppress halos) on the tiff.

I just tried the DIF in my Q Image on a couple of shots, following instructions here (external link).

There really is a major difference in the power you can apply with DIF that appears as overfocusing using USM. I'm convinced enough to give it a try. Of course, I already use Q Image.
