back button focus

How do I separate the shutter button and focus on my 40D? I want to use the af-on button to focus. Thanks

So which is the setting most people are always talking about ?

1: Metering + AF start / AF stop

2: Metering start / Meter + AF start

3: AE Lock / Metering + AF start

4: Metering + AF start / Disable

Setting 2, or maybe 3. If you mainly use M mode, then 3 serves no purpose.
