I just got back from a 4 day trip with my 14-year-old daughter, her longest ride yet on the back of my BMW R1200GS. We pulled off the road near the intersection of I-5 and the 46, in Lost Hills, and I snapped a quick shot of the bike. Funny enough, the photo turned out looking like we were in the middle of the desert somewhere. I played a little with the post processing to give it even more of a deserty/ adventure feel to it. From just the shot you would hardly guess it was spitting distance from a McDonalds parking lot.

For BMW standard, isn't this a compact bike?
Still this is one with axle and not chain or am I wrong?

 Well, compared to the K1600GT, it sure is.

BMW's can get pretty small, like the F650GS, all the way up to huge touring bikes, like the K1600. "GS" stands for Geland Strasse, which is sort of like "enduro" or onroad/ offroad. In the GS line, the R1200 like the one in the photo are the big boys...the F650 and F800 are both smaller. The R1200GS "Adventure" is even bigger than mine (same bike, just bigger gas tank, more options, a little taller, etc.)

You are correct, this bike uses a "shaft drive" instead of a chain. Chains on BMW's are mostly only on the smaller bikes.

Nice ride, Ive been wanting a Suzuki DR-Z400 or DR650 for some time now. They are not really (travel) bikes, but I love all dual-purpose bikes. They really are the ultimate go-anywhere vehicle. If the interstate gets blocked, one can ride off into the woods and find another way! What I would really love to have is the Military Diesel powered KLR-650...90 or so MPG! and indestructible...of course we civilians are not allowed to have such great engineering..:(
