Ok so I bought my YN-468 about 2 years ago and have used it a lot.. I know about the issues some have seen with it as seen here
https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1000969

so I was using it friday night and it died. Going to do what is in that thread when I get time but with hockey banquets, soccer practices and coaching soccer it will be a bit of time.
So still on a budget I decided to go and buy the YN-468II. I searched here high and low and there are not many threads for this flash so figured I would just post up that one is on order and my thoughts over my original 468 when it comes in.

since I have to open my older 468, I will most likely mod it to use an external power source if and after it is fixed. Thoughts are to just put a plug on the battery door and solder wires so it will NOT ever use AA batteries anymore.
more on that later... ;)

p.s. wanted to add.. that i have been using my RF-603's and love them.. now seeing I may have 2 flashes and was going to get more 603's guess ill be looking at the 622c's next!!!! I havent kept up with the hardware lately... so more reading to do.

yn468-ii came in today.
Pro:
built solid
AA battery compartment is really nice with the stacked setup

Cons:
LOUD - WOW SOOOO LOUD compared to the non ii version
85mm - but other was that way too
buttons - dont like the new feel as I prefer the original button feel

pics to come but just wanted to say.. yes it works great.. flashes and QUICK to charge and ready to fire again. Will be doing some practice shots soon...

You should check if not just the flash bulb is broken. Flash bulbs were normal replacement parts before manufacturers decided that one should rather buy a new flash.

Thanks.. will do on the tear down...

however if the bulb was bad.. would the cap still discharge? the light on the back goes red and never goes green stating charging??? just curious...
thanks!

Hm,

On all my Yongnuos red means charged, green charging, like on the Canons. Hence the capacitor seems to be ok, probably just the bulb broken. Just search on Google if someone has changed it and how to get the bulb.

Interesting - on my YN-460 II RED as it is charging and GREEN when it is charged and ready to flash.

well you just made me go look.. im watching the flyers as i thought they were gonna screw up again but dont think so!!!

anyway.. i went and looked at my 468 ii and as fast as i could press the pilot button the led stayed red... and it was fast too.. interesting...

so my 468 non ii is red when ready to fire then green when charging (I have fresh batteries in it so maybe the ii wasnt showing green as fast charge???)

so id check yours again..

WOOOOT OPEN NET GOAL!!! sorry for the side track.. :D

Just checked my YN-460 II again - RED LED when first turned ON or when charging, then GREEN when ready to fire. Stays GREEN until I hit the Pilot button or trigger a flash. The batteries have been in for a while so it takes more than 1 second to recharge. I should be getting my YN-468 II any day now - maybe tomorrow. It shows as being shipped. Will check on it when I get it. GREEN when ready makes so much more sense than RED - but!!!

you my friend are a genius!!!! however cuz there was a known problem that a few have fixed as the cap being bad.. well this is my luck...

i didnt bother taking it apart as I want to get the cap in first.. expecting it to be the worst it could be...

I took my flash apart following the other thread.. THANK YOU MAN!!! was so easy a caveman can do it!!!!!!

so what did I find???

I'm glad you found the problem!

Well, tsbrewers in his post in the Faulty Yongnuo YN468 repaired found the same small capacitor.

I agree with you and him: the new surface mount capacitor is the replacement of the old faulty capacitor. Both tsbrewers and you have flashes newer than mine.

It seems still the same board with the same design.
They just replaced the faulty capacitor for a (hopefully) more reliable surface mount capacitor as you see in the animation bellow.

Regarding the question about the red and green LEDs, my flash never showed the green LED until the day it died for the second time.
I remember it took an unusual long time to recycle showing only the red LED as if ready, and then both the red and green LEDs started flashing.
I have a picture of them that 'last' moment. Since then, my flash lives in a drawer waiting for a delayed repair. :(
