I have an alien b800 and just got a 1d mark iin well now comes the issue of how to trigger it.
Is the cybersync system a good one will I save enough buying used vs new?
I'm new here and don't know all the used prices for things.

Also is there an alternative to the vagabond?
Thanks!

The cybersync system is dead on reliable and cheaper than the offerings from pocket wizard. There are less expensive options like the YN 602 or YN 603 systems which are also highly regarded. The value of new versus used is really a personal choice.

I doubt you will find any system that compares favorably with the vagabond mini.

A used cyber sync transmitter and battery operated receiver can be had for less than the price of a single pocket wizard X transceiver. The only alternative to the vagabond is a DIY battery system, which on average only saves you about $100. And that was trying to build a system like the vagabond I or vagabond II. You just can't beat the price of a vagabond mini (new or used).....

Well i am not big on building things that require wiring, my luck ill shock myself. I am fine with buying used stuff generally it's works perfectly. I was just curious if it holds it's value that well. I can get I think one transmitter and Receiver for 150? Something like that

You mean new? Thats about the new cost with shipping $59 transmitter, $69 for the receiver. http://www.paulcbuff.com/cst.php (external link)

Worry about what works the best, not what holds its value. These are electronic devices, other than lenses nothing holds its value long term.

That's not what I'm saying. I know how much they cost I have them in my shopping cart now with some other stuff.
I'm asking if I should wait and try to pick some used ones up and save my self some money or just by them brand new. If the are really that great they probably hold there value fairly well and I would only save my self less then like 20 bucks, at that point I'd just buy new.

Look on ebay and in the sale forum here to see what they are being offered for. Then decide for yourself.

Well, there was a review by TMR Design about the Tronix Explorer. He said it was really good, and for a while, it's all you seemed to hear about. But since TMR has disappeared, I haven't seen a single post about that battery system. I guess he was one of the biggest supporters. Perhaps there are others out there that still use that system that can comment.

Cybersyncs are rock solid. I used them for years. I feel that the Phottix Strato II is just as solid and offers more flexibility, especially if you're using multiple flashes and want to be able to turn them on/off remotely. There's also the added bonus of not having to use cables unless you're firing a strobe.

I have a guide to the common manual radio trigger up here if that may help -

The Cybersyncs and Strato II are great solid options.

I think that was before the mini was launched. If I remember correctly he was comparing the tronix to the vagabond II. I have both and while the vagabond II has more capacity the mini wins on portability and ease of use. Robert also was no fan of the Buff company.

I use RadioPoppers with my Alien Bees and have found them to be great. I love being able to adjust the flashes from the camera. I will mention I tried several cheap ebay triggers and found them very unreliable and frustrating in front of a client.

I don't have any experience with Cybersyncs but I here good things about them on the forums.
