Improved optics, IS, AF speed, better aperture mechanism and coatings. Then a new 100-400L and 24-105L would be an awesome combo, covering 24mm through to 400mm with just two lenses. It'll be a very versatile combination and certainly would be a popular travel combo.

The Nikon 80-400 is approximately $2700 and from the reviews it seems to be tack sharp especially on the longer end. I think if anything Canon's version (if it ever comes out) will be in the price range or even more expensive.

Jun 19, 2013 10:14 | #52 Permanent banI hate the IS on my 100-400, the IS is useless, if the new 100-400 ends up costing $3,000, I will sell my 100-400 and just get sigma 50-500 OS.

Following recent trends; buy a 100-400 now; and it will be worth more after the mkII comes out as it will be so much more expensive. [6D]

Besides, just inflation will raise the price significantly over the next four years until the new version is released. Frank Hollis - Retired mass spectroscopist

Quite a lot of used ones coming on market (maybe people hoping new version coming soon) & price dropping, so thought I may as well sell now. Just hope I don't have to wait for too long for the new version.............. Out of curiosity, had you sent it in to Canon to see if they could adjust it for improved performance? 5DII | T3i | EF 17-40 L | EF 24-105 L | EF 24 1.4 L II | EF 28 1.8 | EF 85 1.8 | EF 70-200 2.8 L IS II | EF 100-400 L | EF-S 15-85 IS USM | EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM | EF-S 10-22 USM | EF 100 2.8 Macro USM | EF-S 18-55 IS | EF 35-80 III | EF-S 55-250 IS | Rokinon 8mm FE | EF 75-300 non-USM III | SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4 | Tamron 70-210 | 430EX II | Kenko 2x MC4 and 1.4x Pro300DGX TC
