A few weeks ago I installed CS 6 & decided to re edit some photos from WOG. Well to say the least it didn't go well & colours were out to lunch so with the help of the Post Processing forum & a lot of trial & error I think I'm now getting what I see on screen in my prints. Hopefully these look "right" on your screen but if not please tell it like it is.

The planes look great, good captures! The colors look good on my monitor.
The second and third F-18 shots have some nasty chromatics at the tops of the trees, I guess that what it's called, the purple or blue fringing. There is some in the corsair shot but it is mostly blurred out. I don't know if it is from processing or from the lens at capture.

If that's what you want in your prints, that's just fine, but I think that the saturation is a little too high.

Steve, some of that is panning blur, some I can't explain but it doesn't show in a print (or not so far) & I haven't done anything to that area of the photos that wasn't done to the full frame.

Thanks Frank & Atilla. I do seem to like a bit of extra saturation based on your comments so here's one with the saturation toned down & a bit of (using the sliders name) lightness applied. Am I going the right way? & do I need less saturation yet?

Ultimately it comes down to what your preference is cicopo.

How we choose to post process our images varies as greatly as the method the photographer used to obtain the photo. If extra saturation is something you like, then who are we to tell you not to saturate your photos with extra colour?

As well, when it comes to prints, I'd have to ask which company you're using? Here in Canada for anything up to an 8x12 I use Blacks. For larger prints, I go with EZ Prints down in the US. Ultimately it comes down to what meets the standard you're looking for.

With regards to Vintage Wings and their show, there is one piece of advice I can give you. Generally, quality photos taken of fast moving planes that are against the treeline are very hard to obtain simply because there is too much background for the sensor to consider. I noticed this during my stay last year and as such waited for the plane to become airborne and clear of the treeline before snapping.

Here's what I mean...

I think it's better, but the white fuselage is pretty blown out. I'd reduce the contrast a little. Depending on the original image, an Adjustment Layer, which has a mask built in, is great for making changes to specific areas of the image.
Got PS? See post #9 in A question about sky and also the Airport runway shoot link in my post.

For PS Elements. see Post # 14

Fuselage is grey and looking at Attila's photo I'm way off. Yes I have PS which was the start of the new edits when the installation of CS 6 made everything very different colour wise than CS 4.

I do my own printing with either an Epson Artisan 800 (4 X 6 thru 8 X 10's) or R2880 which does up to 13 X 19. I know the background is busy but I want at least 1 nice print from the low & slow pass & will keep at it.

Again thanks for the help & I'll read that sky message next.

Larry

My thoughts too, Frank. To me, each of them is white-clipped, using TV terms. Attila's version looks much better on my monitor, but I don't claim it to be "calibrated". :)

Nice shots! The colors are a bit odd but the lighting was also weird those days.

Well after many redo's I've settled on this. I've looked very carefully at the jpg's I have of it on the runway & Attila's photo above & printed a couple of other versions which are a bit more saturated than this one (and I like them) and will have a few friends check them to see what they like.

I hope it's just my monitor, but it looks like you've taken a blue schemed aircraft and made it...purple? Looks a little similar to the Corsair you included in your original post.

Last suggestion - perhaps start shooting in RAW as you'll be able to do more in post than you would with a regular jpeg file.
