I do not get good results from converting my images to B&W which is why I colourize a section. Can anyone offer some simple tips about converting so that the tones can be displayed nicely?

Here's a local tutorial for a B&W conversion technique: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=34977

Glenn Mitchell's page contains a couple of actions for B&W conversions: http://www.thelightsright.com/photoshop-tools.htm (external link)

And he has many tutorials related to B&W conversions: http://www.thelightsright.com/tutorials-pdf.htm (external link)

It's 1.30 in the morning and I'm still playing with the new actions and conversion techniques. Thank you for blowing my mind.

Did you check out Mitch's Dodge & Burn tutorial on that page? Give it a shot - it's amazingly simple, really, and can give some unbelievable power to very specific areas.
